Administers anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical procedures in an operating room, or to patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures outside the OR, under the supervision of a faculty member of the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care at the UCSF Medical Center.
Required Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing
- Graduation from a school of anesthesia accredited by the Council of Accreditation of Schools of Anesthesia
- Master's degree from an accredited Nurse Anesthetist program
- Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position

- ย Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse licensure in California
- ย Current National Certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists
- Current American Heart Association BLS certification for healthcare providers
- Current American Heart Association ACLS certification
- Current American Heart Association PALS certification
- ย Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing
UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to be credentialed through its Office of Medical Affairs and Governance (OMAG) to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings. Credentialing takes between 60-90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day. You will be assigned an FPPE template of procedures for CRNAs, but you may add additional privileges on request with an explanation of the purpose.
Duties & Essential Job Functions (Percentage of Time 60-100%)
Determines theย condition of patientsย prior toย a procedureย by reviewing medical records, assessingย patient's
status, conducting a thorough preoperative evaluation, and physical exam of the patient.
Plans for andย administers anesthetics, including inhalation, intravenous, andย regionalย techniques.
Observes, monitors, andย recordsย vital signs andย otherย parameters.
Insertsย invasiveย monitoring lines for an anesthetic,ย andย for interpretationย of physiologicย data.
Maintains patientsย inย a surgical anestheticย state.
Determines theย needย for, andย administers fluids, blood products, andย adjunctย drugs.
Keepsย the surgeonย andย attending anesthesiologist informed of the patient'sย condition.
Takes necessary remedialย action toย correct unacceptableย changesย inย vitalย signs.
Documents anestheticย inย accordance with legal requirements; recordsย type of anestheticย used.
Performsย post-operative follow-up in theย recoveryย room
Communicates with theย attending anesthesia faculty member, asย needed,ย before, during,ย and afterย surgery.
When not assigned toย a case, isย available for work asย needed, determinedย by theย Daily E1 anesthesia facultyย physician.
Work with theย physician/surgeons/Advanced Practice Provider (APP) colleagues andย otherย clinical andย administrative staff to ensureย efficientย patientย managementย basedย onย acceptedย practice,ย including but notย limitedย to,ย performingย historiesย andย physicals,ย pre-operativeย planning/coordinatingย withย outsideย providersย andย PCPsย asย applicable,ย respondingย to changeย inย patientย status,ย treatmentsย asย permittedย underย scopeย ofย practice.ย Provideย patientย andย familyย education andย engageย in anyย approvedย privileges afterย the APP has demonstratedย competency throughย proctoring or Focus Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE)ย process. All UCSF APPs are credentialed and privileged by the Office of Medical Affairs and Governance (OMAG) after approval by Committee on Interdisciplinary Practice (CIDP) Executive Medical Board (EMB), Governance Advisory Council (GAC).ย
