Description
Learning Commons peer tutors provide academic support in a variety of courses and disciplines. Community Service Tutors will provide help to local K-12 students .Academic support can include but is not limited to assistance with homework, study skills and overall concept understanding. Tutors will model strong academic skills, provide study support, and help students figure out their own learning styles and strategies. Areas for support may include reading and mathematics assistance, among other subjects. In addition, these tutors should also be prepared to have career and education planning conversations as appropriate. Community Service Tutors should be prepared to work with individuals with different backgrounds and learning abilities. This role will also assist with other Anchor Insitution Initiatives as they arise. Community Service Tutors must be available to tutor both in person (JCK Library 1250) and online using Zoom.
Examples of Duties
Duties Include:
  • Support, encourage, and mentor students.
  • Practice active listening & questioning strategies.
  • Model strong problem-solving skills.
  • Create opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding.
  • Review and provide feedback to student work.
  • Log information about student visits.
  • Discuss career and educational plans as appropriate with students.
  • Adhere to all university policies, especially those that pertain to working with minors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Learning Commons Manager and Learning Commons Coordinator

Typical Qualifications
Education:
  • Priority given to FWS eligible students.
  • Education majors preferred but not required.
  • Must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
Experience:
  • MS Office and Google Apps
  • Communication skills, including oral, written, and/or nonverbal
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Customer service and professionalism

Supplemental Information
Working Hours:
  • Tuesday-Thursday, 3:00-5:00
  • Other hours as assigned

Special Instructions:
