Job description

Description
The NYC Bard Microcolleges are accepting applications for full-time and part-time tutors. Tutoring happens in person at Microcollege locations in Brooklyn and Harlem. Priority for full-time positions will be given to applications submitted each April 15 for position starting on July 1 of that year. Applications for part-time positions will be considered continuously.
Building on the values and decades of success of the Bard Prison Initiative (BPI), the Bard Microcollege brings tuition-free, high-quality, liberal arts education to communities most often excluded from the university experience. Each microcollege is a partnership between BPI and one or more community-based institutions. These partnerships create opportunities for academic success and disrupt traditional expectations about the kinds of students who can and will succeed in college. Successful candidates will excel at working in a community that is broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.
Full-time tutoring positions have a salary of $55,000 and are fully benefits-eligible through Bard College. Full-time positions are non-renewable one-year positions.
Part-time tutoring positions have a wage of $25/hr for up to 24 hours per week. Part-time tutoring positions are not benefits-eligible. Part-time positions are renewable for up to two years on the basis of evaluations each semester.
We strongly encourage applications from BPI, Microcollege, and BardBac alums, as this is an excellent opportunity for those seeking further study and/or a career in an education-related field.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support Microcollege student learning through one-on-one or small group sessions
  • Submit tutoring report forms
  • Attend paid meetings and workshops
  • Practice technology-based skills, such as working on Zoom, using tools from Google Suite, etc.

  • Sit in on First-Year Seminar or grammar classes and participate in bi-weekly writing workshops
  • Lead bi-weekly Study Hall sessions with other tutors for students
  • Manage and review the tutoring forms submitted by each tutor (to assess what services students use and the strategies tutors most frequently employ)
  • Manage student requests for tutoring
  • Co-lead one tutoring workshop a semester and attend tutoring workshops
  • Respond to tutor writing from tutor workshops
  • Help coordinate Admission processes
  • Complete one article on their experience for the BPI Blog

  • Must be able to occasionally lift 20 pounds
