Trust Safety information

What is a trust safety?

A Trust & Safety job involves protecting users, platforms, and communities from harmful content, fraud, and abuse. Professionals in this field develop policies, enforce guidelines, and use technology to detect and prevent risks such as scams, misinformation, and harassment. Their role often includes working with law enforcement, user support teams, and AI moderation tools to ensure a safe and trustworthy environment. Trust & Safety teams play a critical role in maintaining user confidence and platform integrity.

What are some typical challenges faced by trust safety teams, and how is the work environment structured to address them?

Trust & Safety teams often encounter challenges such as rapidly evolving online threats, balancing user safety with privacy, and making difficult decisions regarding user-generated content. These professionals usually work collaboratively in close-knit teams, often alongside legal, engineering, and customer support departments to address complex cases efficiently. Continuous training, access to internal resources, and regular cross-team communication are commonly provided to help staff stay up-to-date and manage high-pressure situations. The environment is fast-paced but supportive, prioritizing both employee well-being and prompt responses to potential risks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the trust safety position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Trust & Safety professional, you need a strong understanding of risk assessment, online policy enforcement, and content moderation, typically supported by experience in compliance, law, or cybersecurity. Familiarity with moderation platforms, ticketing systems, automation tools, and analytics software is commonly required, and certifications like CIPP or security-related credentials can be advantageous. Outstanding communication, problem-solving skills, empathy, and sound judgment are vital to fairly and efficiently handle sensitive situations. These skills are essential for maintaining a safe online environment, upholding company policies, and protecting both users and organizational integrity.

  • Ability to travel 25-50%, on average, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve.
