These stores offer a wide range of products, including tools, paint, building materials, lawn and garden supplies, and home improvement items. Each location is typically locally owned and operated, which allows stores to cater to the needs of their specific community.

Job description

Lead One of Los Angeles' Most Respected Independent Home Improvement Centers
Since 1949, Vermont Outlet True Value Home Improvement Center has proudly served homeowners, contractors, apartment owners, property managers, local businesses, USC students, and DIYers throughout Los Angeles.
For more than 75 years, we've earned our reputation through knowledgeable service, quality products, and helping customers solve real problems. Even after two Home Depot stores opened nearby, our business continued to grow because our customers value personal relationships, expert advice, and exceptional service.
We were honored with True Value's "Best Hardware Store in Town" award and meet the Home Improvement Center classification standards established by the North American Hardware and Paint Association (NHPA).
At Vermont Outlet, we treat our Associates like partners. We believe great ideas come from every member of our team, and we encourage initiative, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
If you're looking for an opportunity to lead an established business where your decisions matter and your contributions are recognized, we'd love to meet you.

Position Summary

This is a hands-on leadership position. You'll spend your time on the sales floor coaching your team, helping customers, solving problems, and continuously improving store performance.
Unlike large corporate retailers, you'll have the opportunity to make meaningful decisions, influence the direction of the business, and build long-term relationships with customers and Associates alike.

Work Schedule
This is a full-time exempt leadership position.
Store Managers are expected to work the hours necessary to successfully operate the business, including occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
Typical store hours are:
  • Morning Shift: 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Evening Shift: 9:30 AM – 6:30 PM
The schedule generally includes five days per week, including at least one weekend day.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, coach, mentor, and motivate Associates.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, team-oriented work environment.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, onboard, and develop new Associates.
  • Conduct performance coaching and evaluations.
  • Coordinate True Value University (TVU) training and on-the-job training.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Customer Experience
  • Lead by example in delivering outstanding customer service.
  • Build relationships with homeowners, contractors, apartment managers, USC students, and neighborhood customers.
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally and promptly.
  • Ensure every customer leaves with the right products and solutions.

Store Operations
  • Oversee daily operations and workflow.
  • Ensure departments remain clean, organized, and fully stocked.
  • Maintain merchandising standards throughout the store.
  • Supervise receiving, inventory control, pricing, and merchandising.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and safety standards.

Sales & Business Development
  • Drive sales growth and profitability.
  • Analyze store performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Work closely with ownership to achieve sales and operational goals.

  • Support marketing initiatives and community involvement.

Administrative & Financial Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily cash management and store reporting.
  • Monitor inventory levels and purchasing.
  • Assist ownership with budgeting and operational planning.
  • Maintain accurate records and operational procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies and applicable laws.

Qualifications
We're looking for someone who:
  • Has outstanding customer service and leadership skills.
  • Has a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Leads by example and enjoys working alongside the team.
  • Has excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Is organized and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Can work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Is available to work a flexible schedule, including one weekend day.
  • Has strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, email, and point-of-sale systems.

  • Assist Associates with physical tasks as needed.

Compensation & Benefits
In addition to a competitive salary, Vermont Outlet offers a comprehensive benefits package valued at approximately $7,000-$9,500 annually, depending on eligibility.
Benefits include:
  • Competitive salary with annual performance reviews.
  • Individual annual performance bonuses.
  • Semiannual team sales incentive bonuses.
  • 60% employer-paid Kaiser Permanente Gold 80 medical plan with dental coverage.

  • $300 CalSavers employer matching contribution.
  • Opportunities for advancement and continued professional development.
  • Do-It-Best / True Value University (TVU) Learning Center - Leadership training.
Benefits are subject to company policy and eligibility requirements.

Why Join Vermont Outlet?
This is more than a management position.
You'll lead one of Southern California's most respected independent Home Improvement Centers and work directly with ownership to shape the business's future.
Unlike a large corporate retailer, you'll know your customers personally. You'll mentor Associates, build lasting relationships within the community, and make decisions that directly impact the store's success.
If you're passionate about hardware and home improvement, enjoy helping people, and are looking for an opportunity to lead a successful family-owned business with deep community roots, we'd love to hear from you.
