Job description

Work Schedule: Part Time (29 Hours Weekly)

Hourly Rate:       $15:00/hour

This position is responsible for:

Assisting in picking-up donations by riding in a Salvation Army truck and lifting, carrying, and/or hauling donations into the truck and unloading the same at the warehouse; assists in navigating for the Truck Driver; ensures the accountability, security, and safety of the donations when in route; assists in maintaining the vehicle in proper working order and in compliance with established standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Rides in a Salvation Army truck on a scheduled route to pick up donated items; assists in navigating the driver to destinations by reading a map and/or hand-written directions.
  • Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures; explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted.
  • Lifts, carries, and/or hauls donations into truck; packs items in truck in a manner that maximizes use of space, protects items from damage, and ensures safety.
  • Prepares donation receipts for customers; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.
  • Maintains good relationships with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
  • Unloads donations from truck upon arrival at warehouse; distributes items to appropriate locations in the warehouse.
  • Loads the truck with items to be taken to the dump.
  • Deliver appliances and furniture purchased by customers.
  • Performs routine maintenance of the truck; checks fluid levels on a regular basis; coordinates and may participate in repair work as needed.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
  • Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.
  • Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
  • Employees in this position must meet all DOT requirements for vehicles associated with this position at all times.
  • Work requires riding in a vehicle daily with exposure to the outdoors where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.

Education and Experience:

  • No formal education required AND
  • Six (6) months’ experience lifting and hauling heavy items such as appliances and furniture; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid State Driver's License.
