What is a Tribune?

A Tribune was an official in ancient Rome elected by the people to protect their interests and rights, particularly those of the common citizens (plebeians). Tribunes had the power to veto actions by other magistrates and propose legislation. Their role was crucial in balancing the power between the patrician class and the plebeians. In modern contexts, the term 'tribune' can also refer to someone who champions the rights of the people or acts as a spokesperson for a group.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tribune, and why are they important?

A Tribune, historically a Roman official, required strong leadership, legal knowledge, and the ability to represent and protect the interests of the people. Familiarity with Roman law, political structures, and administrative systems was essential, often gained through formal education or military service. Persuasive communication, integrity, and conflict resolution skills helped Tribunes effectively advocate and mediate between citizens and authorities. These skills ensured that Tribunes could successfully fulfill their duty of safeguarding citizens' rights and maintaining civic order.

What are some common challenges faced by a Tribune when representing the interests of their constituency or organization?

Tribunes often encounter the challenge of balancing the diverse interests and needs of their constituency while adhering to organizational or institutional policies. They must be effective communicators and negotiators, as they frequently act as intermediaries between the public and leadership, working to resolve conflicts and advocate for fair treatment. Additionally, Tribunes need to stay informed about current regulations and procedures to offer accurate guidance, which can be demanding in fast-changing environments. Building trust and maintaining transparency are crucial for success in this role.

About The Tribune

The Salt Lake Tribune has been Utah's independent voice since 1871. In 2019, we became the first legacy U.S. newspaper to transition to nonprofit status, helping to lead a national movement toward sustainable local journalism.

Today, we continue to expand our reach across Utah through innovative reporting, strong community engagement and new local initiatives. We're seeking a Sales Representative to join our team and help advance this mission by building strong client partnerships that support impactful local journalism.

The Role

As a Sales Representative, you will drive revenue growth by developing and maintaining client relationships, executing effective advertising programs, and helping businesses connect with Tribune audiences across Utah. This role plays a critical part in sustaining nonprofit journalism through strategic, ethical advertising partnerships.

This role reports to the Chief Development Officer. This is a full-time, salaried, benefitted position that is eligible for a performance-based commission plan. This is a hybrid position, with at least two days per week working from our Salt Lake office.

What You'll Do

  • Maintain and grow a client list
  • Oversee the execution of advertising programs and client relationships on your assigned list
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure campaigns are delivered accurately and on deadline
  • Prepare sales materials, presentations, and decks for client meetings

Compensation & Benefits

  • We offer a $55,000 base salary with performance-based commission, with target total compensation of $78,000+. Commission is uncapped, and earnings increase with strong performance.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Paid time off, sick leave, and parental leave
  • Employer-paid life insurance, short-term & long-term disability
  • Flexible hours and hybrid work options
  • Cellphone stipend + mileage reimbursement
  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness eligibility for qualified employees

Why Join Us

This is more than a job - it's an opportunity to help build a sustainable future for local journalism in Utah while working directly with communities and businesses across the state. Your work will directly support The Tribune's mission to serve Utahns for the next 150 years.

The Salt Lake Tribune is an inclusive employer. We're committed to building a team that reflects the communities we serve, and we strongly encourage people of all backgrounds to apply.
