Job description

Summary: Queens University of Charlotte’s Athletics is an NCAA Division I program distinguished by its commitment to transforming the lives of its students and consistently competing at the highest possible levels. The Royals joined the ASUN Conference on July 1, 2022.

Former graduate assistants (GA) and interns have used their learning and practicing experiences with the Royals to land jobs with organizations such as the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, USA Triathlon, USA Swimming, and Ally to name a few.

This is a 12-month renewable internship that reports directly to the Assistant Athletic Director for Communications. The GA position begins during the summer ahead of the 2026-2027 season. The successful candidate must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student at Queens University of Charlotte. There is no expressed or implied commitment to a paid position upon completion of the internship. This role is eligible for tuition remission for up to six credit hours per semester and a stipend. No housing is offered.

This position is considered a Responsible Employee for purposes of the university’s Sexual Misconduct Policy. As such, this position is required to report any incident of sexual misconduct or interpersonal violence to the university’s Title IX Coordinator when made aware of such.

Queens conducts confidential background investigations on candidates as part of the hiring process, including any past NCAA rules violations. According to the NCAA bylaws:

“Contractual agreements or appointments between a coach and an institution shall include the stipulation that a coach who is found in violation of NCAA regulations shall be subject to disciplinary or corrective action as set forth in the provisions of the NCAA enforcement procedures, including suspension without pay or termination of employment for significant or repetitive violations.”

Duties and Responsibilities

This is a great opportunity to enhance an individual’s athletic communications skills. The graduate assistant for athletic communications will learn how to assist the athletic communications department in their efforts to grow the Queens Athletics brand through multiple forms of storytelling. They will serve as the primary contact for multiple sports as they hone their skills in the profession. The selected individual will be provided instruction and directions and perform duties under close observation.

Areas Learning and Application:

  • Learn and practice writing and editing press releases
  • Learn and practice keeping or overseeing in-game statistics
  • Learn and practice daily maintenance of the athletic website
  • Learn and practice building relationships with outside media
  • Learn and practice preparing weekly conference reports and student-athlete award nominations
  • Learn and practice how to produce graphics
  • Learn and practice assistance in production of digital web content
  • Learn and practice how to produce video content
  • Learn and practice how to operate cameras for photography and video
  • Learn and practice promoting athletic teams and student-athletes via social media
  • Learn and practice organizing photo and video shoots for coaches, staff, and student-athletes
  • Learn and practice daily management of the athletic social media accounts
  • Learn and practice preparing monthly reports on social media analytics
  • Learn and practice assisting in home event management and staffing

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in communications, journalism, sport management or related area of study
  • Must be a current, full-time graduate student at Queens University of Charlotte.
  • Strong communication, organization, writing, editing and design skills
  • Experience using Mac and PC computers
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms
  • Strong follow‐up and follow‐through skills as well as ability to plan, organize and control projects through to completion
  • Knowledge of Adobe Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Audition)
  • Video/audio editing experience preferred, graphic design experience also preferred
  • Photography skills are strongly encouraged
