Traveling Assistant Project Manager information

What does a traveling assistant project manager do?

A Traveling Assistant Project Manager supports project managers by helping coordinate and oversee projects at different locations. Their responsibilities often include assisting with planning, scheduling, communication between teams, and ensuring that project tasks are completed on time and within budget. Because the role requires travel, they may move between job sites to provide hands-on support and resolve issues as they arise. This position is common in industries like construction, engineering, or large-scale events where projects are spread across multiple locations.

What are some common challenges faced by traveling assistant project managers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Traveling Assistant Project Managers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple teams across different locations, adapting to varying site conditions, and managing tight project schedules while on the move. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are crucial for staying aligned with project goals and timelines. Utilizing project management software and maintaining regular check-ins with on-site and remote teams can help manage these complexities and ensure projects stay on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a traveling assistant project manager, and why are they important?

To excel as a Traveling Assistant Project Manager, you need strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (such as Procore or MS Project), scheduling tools, and basic knowledge of construction documents are commonly required. Adaptability, attention to detail, and the ability to build relationships with diverse teams are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure smooth project execution, effective coordination across locations, and timely delivery of project milestones.

Job description

Job Title: Assistant Project Manager

Job Description

This Assistant Project Manager role focuses on secure construction and high-quality interior fit-out projects, including SCIF and other secure interiors work. You will actively support and lead field operations, working closely with Project Managers to ensure all work meets plans, specifications, and stringent security requirements. The position offers the opportunity to grow with a highly reputable, fast-growing organization that specializes in SCIF construction and complex secure tenant fit-outs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Project Managers to ensure all work is performed in strict accordance with plans, specifications, and security requirements for secure interior construction and SCIF projects.
  • Coordinate, supervise, and assist with the execution of field activities, stepping in as needed to keep productivity moving and resolve issues in real time.
  • Manage project schedules, sequencing, and daily work plans while maintaining safety, quality, and production goals across multiple secure construction and tenant fit-out projects.
  • Maintain a strong, visible jobsite presence and lead by example through hands-on involvement in day-to-day field operations.
  • Interface directly with clients, property managers, architects, engineers, local officials, and security representatives to support project communication and coordination.
  • Monitor and control jobsite conditions, ensuring strict compliance with safety standards and secure site protocols, including ICD 705, NISPOM, and other applicable requirements.
  • Complete and maintain accurate daily documentation, including logs, reports, inspections, and other project records to support compliance and project tracking.
  • Assist with procurement activities, including material coordination, material handling, and logistics to support field operations.
  • Support self-perform trades when applicable by coordinating resources, removing roadblocks, and ensuring work progresses according to plan.
  • Uphold high workmanship standards and consistently represent company values through active field leadership on all secure construction and interior fit-out projects.

Essential Skills

  • Proven Assistant Project Manager (APM) experience on quality interior fit-out projects, with a focus on commercial or secure interiors rather than restaurant, retail, or multi-family work.
  • Hands-on experience in interior construction and fit-out, including coordination of field activities and support of superintendent-level responsibilities.
  • Experience with SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) construction or other secure construction projects, including familiarity with secure site protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project schedules, sequencing, and daily work plans while maintaining safety, quality, and production targets.
  • Ability to interpret and work from construction plans and specifications and ensure field execution aligns with design and security requirements.
  • Experience interfacing with clients, property managers, architects, engineers, local officials, and security representatives on active construction projects.
  • Strong documentation skills, including maintaining daily logs, reports, and inspection records.
  • Experience working on SCIF or secure projects in the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia) area.
  • Ability to maintain a strong jobsite presence and provide hands-on field leadership.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in secure construction projects, with direct exposure to ICD 705, NISPOM, or similar secure site standards.
  • Experience supporting self-perform trades and coordinating materials, procurement, and logistics on interior fit-out projects.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with diverse project stakeholders in secure environments.
  • Motivation to grow within a highly reputable organization that specializes in SCIF construction and secure interiors.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to support multiple projects and changing site conditions.

Work Environment

This role is field-focused and requires extensive travel, with jobs involving 100% travel and no guarantee of being home on weekends. Candidates can live anywhere, as long as they are willing and able to travel to project sites as required. You will work primarily on secure construction and interior fit-out projects, including SCIFs and other highly secure environments, often governed by standards such as ICD 705 and NISPOM. The position involves regular presence on active jobsites, close coordination with field crews, and adherence to strict safety and secure site protocols in a fast-paced, production-oriented construction environment.
