The LA Department of Corrections is seeking dependable and fair individuals to fill an important role in our department as CORRECTIONAL OFFICER. This position is vital in the department as it is the front-line individual who enforces the custody and control of inmates in a State penal institution. An officer who is assertive and accountable can make a difference in the day-to-day operation of a facility working to rehabilitate individuals.

Minimum Qualifications Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR One year of experience in any field. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted. In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Job Duties and Other Information EXPECTATIONS FOR CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS: Four week Correctional Officer Training Academy. Work closely with inmates incarcerated in a State prison facility. Primarily responsible for the custody and security of inmates - in facility buildings, prison dorms, workshops, and/or fields.

Supervise housekeeping of inmate housing areas, escort prisoners, investigate suspicious activities, and perform in-depth security searches/shakedowns of inmate's person, property, living quarters and work locations. Supervise inmate work crews, patrol areas of the prison, and transport inmates as assigned. Follow direction given by upper level officers, departmental policies, and regulations.

Will receive firearms training. Position-Specific Details: Appointment Type: PROBATION, or PROMOTION OF A PERMANENT, CLASSIFIED LOUISIANA STATE EMPLOYEE Current permanent status classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted. An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.

This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment. Career Progression: Corrections Cadet, Sergeant, or Sergeant-Master Filled at the highest level of experience of the selected applicant.

- Salary depends on level of experience. Start as a Corrections Cadet. (May start as a Corrections Sergeant with certain qualifying experience.) Eligible for reallocation, up one pay level from Cadet, to Corrections Sergeant after 6 months of successful employment

Eligible for reallocation, up two pay levels from Sergeant, to Corrections Sergeant-Master after one year of successful LA DOC employment. With 2 years of Correctional Office experience and permanent status, eligible to apply for promotion to Corrections Lieutenant, which is up two pay levels from Corrections Sergeant-Master Compensation: To see minimum qualifications and salary ranges, click HERE. Other Important Information: IMPORTANT: In the supplemental questions section, applicants must authorize the HR Office of DPS&C-Corrections Services to contact prior employers to check references under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), to be considered for employment, by answering 'YES' to the PREA question.

Any degree, certificate, special license, or DD-214 must be verified by official documentation prior to hire. Any qualifying experience that is based on college credit/college hours should have an accompanying transcript for verification. This is a 24 hour facility.
