Job description

What you'll do

Giga is seeking an Engineering Manager, Transformers to lead and grow our transformer engineering function. You will develop engineers, drive transformer design and product development efforts, and partner closely with manufacturing, supply chain, operations, and commercial teams. The ideal candidate brings deep practical experience designing distribution transformers and enjoys building high-performing teams.

Where you'll work

We are an in-office culture - velocity matters when you're building physical infrastructure, and the best decisions happen in the room. This role is ideally based in our San Francisco, Long Beach, or Houston offices, with full-time onsite expectations outside of bi-weekly WFH Fridays.

That said, we will make exceptions for truly exceptional talent if you live outside one of our hubs. If you're the right person for this role, we'll have a conversation about what works.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of transformer engineers.
  • Own execution of transformer design and product development projects from concept through production.
  • Drive engineering decisions related to performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Partner with manufacturing, supply chain, quality, and operations teams.
  • Lead root-cause investigations and corrective actions.
  • Establish engineering processes and standards.
  • Support supplier evaluations and technical reviews.
  • Manage engineering priorities and schedules.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience designing and developing distribution transformer products for the North American market.
  • 3+ years of leadership or management experience.
  • Strong understanding of transformer electrical, mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing fundamentals.
  • Experience bringing transformer products from design through production.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and operations teams.
  • Knowledge of IEEE, UL, ANSI, and NEMA transformer standards.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
Bonus points
  • Experience with dry-type transformers.
  • Experience with power transformers.
  • Experience in quality, manufacturing, supplier quality, or process engineering.
  • Grid infrastructure or substation equipment experience.
  • Experience working with international manufacturing partners.
  • Foreign language capabilities.
  • Advanced engineering degree or MBA.
Benefits
  • Subsidized health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Equity (options) in a rapidly growing startup
  • 401(k) with 4% employer match
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Parental leave
  • Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)
  • Commuter benefits
  • Monthly team onsites where all offices come in-person to collaborate
