How much do transformer design jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for transformer design in the United States is $101,072.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $82,500.00 and $115,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Transformer Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Transformer Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, transformer theory, and typically a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, finite element analysis (FEA) tools, and industry standards like IEC or IEEE is essential. Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and address complex design challenges. These competencies ensure the creation of efficient, safe, and reliable transformers that meet technical and regulatory requirements.

What are the 4 types of transformers?

In transformer design, the four main types are power transformers, distribution transformers, instrument transformers, and specialty transformers. Power transformers are used for high-voltage transmission, while distribution transformers step down voltage for end-use. Instrument transformers, such as current and voltage transformers, are used for measurement and protection in electrical systems.

What job works on transformers?

A transformer design engineer or electrical engineer works on designing, developing, and testing electrical transformers. These professionals typically have knowledge of electrical systems, materials, and industry standards, and may use CAD software and testing equipment in their work environment.

What are transformer design engineers?

Transformer design engineers are professionals who specialize in designing and developing electrical transformers, which are devices used to transfer electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. They are responsible for creating detailed technical specifications, selecting appropriate materials, and ensuring the transformer meets safety and efficiency standards. Transformer design engineers often work closely with manufacturing teams to oversee prototype development and testing, as well as troubleshoot and optimize designs for specific applications. Their expertise is essential in industries like power generation, transmission, and distribution.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in transformer design roles, and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in transformer design often encounter challenges such as meeting strict efficiency standards, managing thermal performance, and ensuring compliance with industry safety regulations. These challenges are typically addressed by using advanced simulation software, collaborating closely with mechanical and electrical engineers, and staying updated with evolving standards like IEC and IEEE. Additionally, regular prototype testing and iterative design processes help identify and resolve performance issues early, ensuring robust and reliable transformer designs.

What is the difference between Transformer Design vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectTransformer DesignElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, specialized training in power systemsEngineering degree, often with electrical specialization
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, manufacturing facilities, project sitesOffice, project sites, research labs
Industry UsagePower generation, transmission, distributionBroad industry roles including power, electronics, automation
Common Search/ComparisonFocused on transformer-specific skills and designBroader electrical engineering roles and responsibilities

Transformer Design specialists focus on creating and optimizing transformers for power systems, requiring specific technical skills and certifications. Electrical Engineers have a broader scope, working on various electrical systems, including transformers, but also encompassing other electrical components and systems. While both roles require an electrical engineering background, Transformer Design is more specialized in power transformer development and manufacturing.

Can I make 200k as an electrical engineer?

Transformer design is a specialized field within electrical engineering, and experienced professionals with advanced skills, certifications, and a strong track record can potentially earn salaries around or above $200,000 annually, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or senior roles. However, typical salaries vary based on experience, location, and industry, with many electrical engineers earning between $70,000 and $130,000 per year. Achieving a $200,000 salary often requires significant expertise, leadership responsibilities, or working in specialized sectors such as power systems or consulting.

How much does a transformer engineer make?

A transformer engineer's salary typically ranges from $70,000 to $120,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in electrical design and testing can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $130,000. Certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) can also influence earning potential.
