What is a transformer design engineer?

Transformer design engineers are professionals who specialize in designing and developing electrical transformers, which are devices used to transfer electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. They are responsible for creating detailed technical specifications, selecting appropriate materials, and ensuring the transformer meets safety and efficiency standards. Transformer design engineers often work closely with manufacturing teams to oversee prototype development and testing, as well as troubleshoot and optimize designs for specific applications. Their expertise is essential in industries like power generation, transmission, and distribution.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a transformer design engineer?

To thrive as a Transformer Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, transformer theory, and typically a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, finite element analysis (FEA) tools, and industry standards like IEC or IEEE is essential. Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and address complex design challenges. These competencies ensure the creation of efficient, safe, and reliable transformers that meet technical and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in transformer design roles, and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in transformer design often encounter challenges such as meeting strict efficiency standards, managing thermal performance, and ensuring compliance with industry safety regulations. These challenges are typically addressed by using advanced simulation software, collaborating closely with mechanical and electrical engineers, and staying updated with evolving standards like IEC and IEEE. Additionally, regular prototype testing and iterative design processes help identify and resolve performance issues early, ensuring robust and reliable transformer designs.

What is the difference between Transformer Design vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectTransformer DesignElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, specialized training in power systemsEngineering degree, often with electrical specialization
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, manufacturing facilities, project sitesOffice, project sites, research labs
Industry UsagePower generation, transmission, distributionBroad industry roles including power, electronics, automation
Common Search/ComparisonFocused on transformer-specific skills and designBroader electrical engineering roles and responsibilities

Transformer Design specialists focus on creating and optimizing transformers for power systems, requiring specific technical skills and certifications. Electrical Engineers have a broader scope, working on various electrical systems, including transformers, but also encompassing other electrical components and systems. While both roles require an electrical engineering background, Transformer Design is more specialized in power transformer development and manufacturing.

Job description

Experience Without Limits
Come shape the future of brand experience.

At Jack Morton, we design and build head-turning, smile-inducing, impact-driving brand experiences that redefine what experiential marketing can achieve. We help our clients unlock the full value of experiences by turning bold ideas into meaningful connections.

That takes a team that's bold, curious, and acts as one. We build on each other's ideas, challenge conventions, and show up for one another every day. Here, you'll do your best work, grow quickly, and partner across clients, disciplines, and global teams to bring new ideas to life.

This is a place where curiosity drives what's next, boldness raises the bar, and every win is shared. Where ownership is expected, egos are left at the door, and the work reflects the passion and talent of the people behind it.

Experience without limits—in your work, your growth, and your impact.

Turn bold ideas into buildable reality.

What happens when creative vision meets technical expertise?

We're looking for an experienced Senior CAD Detailer - Experiential & Events who knows how to take ambitious designs and turn them into precise, efficient, production-ready solutions. If you can look at a complex 3D concept and immediately start thinking about how it will be fabricated, assembled, transported, and installed, this is your opportunity to make an impact.

This is not simply a drafting position. You'll be a technical leader, problem-solver, and key partner throughout the entire project lifecycle.

The Opportunity

As a Senior CAD Detailer - Experiential & Events, you'll work on some of our largest and most complex exhibit projects, collaborating across Design, Estimating, Project Management, Fabrication, CNC, Graphics, Service, and external vendors.

What You'll Do
  • Transform design concepts and meshes into detailed, fabrication-ready 3D solid models.
  • Create accurate 2D and 3D CAD drawings, plans, elevations, control drawings, assembly drawings, and setup drawings.
  • Develop components for CNC production, fabrication, assembly, and installation.
  • Provide detailed information for materials, finishes, hardware, dimensions, tolerances, electrical requirements, and part numbers.
  • Create setup drawings for complex show-floor environments, including hanging structures, lighting, electrical, networking, AV, flooring, staging, and component placement.
  • Partner with Designers to ensure creative concepts are functional, realistic, manufacturable, and cost-effective.
  • Work with Estimators to develop detailing hours and identify efficient fabrication solutions.
  • Collaborate with Project Management to deliver successful custom exhibits on time and within budget.
  • Work directly with Fabrication teams to ensure smooth handoffs and efficient production.
  • Support Service teams with drawings for prepping, staging, and shipping.
  • Provide Graphics teams with accurate elevations and graphic opportunities.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors to ensure products and services meet project requirements and company standards.
  • Build and maintain digital libraries of parts, layouts, and commonly used products.
  • Apply knowledge of ADA requirements, building codes, show-floor regulations, and fabrication standards.
  • Review models and drawings from team members and provide technical guidance.
  • Help improve drafting standards, processes, libraries, and workflows.
  • Serve as the technical lead on the most challenging projects.
Leadership & Mentorship

At this level, your expertise goes beyond your own projects.

You'll mentor team members, share knowledge, review work, and provide fabrication guidance across the team. You'll work closely with the Lead Detailer on complex projects and support the Detailing Manager when needed with project assignments, scheduling, forecasting, and onboarding.

You'll help make the entire detailing team better.

What You Bring
  • 7–9+ years of CAD detailing experience, ideally within the exhibit industry, architectural fabrication, or a related field.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD 2D and 3D.
  • Expert knowledge of drafting, dimensioning, tolerancing, solid modeling, and manufacturing processes.
  • Strong understanding of production materials and fabrication techniques.
  • Experience translating designs into real-world fabrication solutions.
  • CNC programming experience is a strong plus.
  • Experience mentoring, leading, or supervising others is preferred.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Acrobat.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent organization and time-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines.
  • Confidence to challenge ideas, present solutions, and advocate for better ways to build.
  • Ability to work overtime when project demands require it.
Ready to Build What's Next?

If you're an experienced detailer looking for the opportunity to take on complex projects, influence creative solutions, mentor others, and play a critical role in bringing extraordinary environments to life, we want to hear from you!
