Job description

WEG is hiring a Control Panel Design Engineer I.

You will create designs and documentation for industrial motor control panels that meet customer requirements while complying with applicable standards and manufacturing procedures. Designs include standard products, modified standard products, customer or application-specific OEM products, and custom products. Designers are responsible for all documentation, including drawings, manufacturing instructions, and bills of materials, and must interface with sales, service, customers, and production.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop schematics, bills of materials, and assembly drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Provide guidance and support to manufacturing and other departments regarding product requirements.
  • Participate in and provide training for other engineering team members.
  • Study and analyze project technical documents and specifications.
  • Apply a thorough understanding of relevant electrical standards to prevent electrical hazards.
  • Communicate progress and deviations from schedule or budget to colleagues, managers, and clients in a timely manner.
  • Estimate time, cost, labor, and materials required for production; reformulate plans as needed based on changing circumstances or client requirements.
  • Adhere to best practices for documentation and version control.
  • Define design approach for new products and platforms and generate design specifications.
  • Take accurate field notes, sketches, and single-line diagrams for use in preparing construction documents.
  • Make design decisions based on specific job requirements and prepare complete design packages.
  • Release panels and prints to operations and release critical materials for purchasing.
  • Ensure product designs meet customer requirements, quality expectations, and timelines.
  • Mark up schematics and generate revisions or additions to existing drawing sets.
  • Process markups affecting multiple drawings.
  • Ensure consistency across drawing sets.
  • Check markups for practicality and obstructions using multi-layer review methods.
  • Create, revise, and maintain routings and work centers in the system.
  • Update metrics to improve routing and production planning accuracy.
  • Maintain revision control.
  • Execute SAP tasks.
  • Drive cost reduction initiatives.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.

Education:

Engineering degree or equivalent related work experience.


Knowledge/Training

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Basic familiarity with 3-phase and single-phase power design required.
  • VFD and Soft Starter principles preferred.
  • AutoCAD required; AutoCAD Electrical / EPLAN preferred.
  • Excel proficiency including charts, graphs, formulas, and tables required.
  • Knowledge of industrial standards and their application, including UL 508A, NEC, NFPA, and NEMA; UL 508A preferred.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and construction methods with the ability to maintain design cost targets.
  • Understanding of BOM systems and material management.
  • Basic programming of intelligent devices and components.
  • Ability to read schematics for troubleshooting and functional defect identification.
  • Familiarity with basic programming methods and parameter identification of industrial drives and/or soft starters.
  • Ability to create logical circuits based on customer operational requirements.
  • Familiarity with quality control tools including 5S and root cause analysis.
  • Basic electronics and circuit analysis including DC and AC fundamentals, electrical laws, series and parallel circuits, network analysis, grounding techniques, magnetism, inductance/capacitance, resistance, diodes, potentiometers, and logic operations required.
