Job description

Description
The Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) Business Line Lead (BLL) is responsible for the strategic growth, financial performance, market positioning, and long-term success of the Civil & Environmental Engineering Business Line. The BLL partners with the Technical Service Leader (TSL) to align technical excellence in civil engineering, water resources, solid waste and resource recovery, decommissioning and demolition, and environmental infrastructure development with national market growth objectives.
Collaborating closely with Regional Office leadership, Global Practice leadership, Environmental Services leadership, and market leaders, the BLL drives business strategy, resource forecasting, digital transformation investments, and growth initiatives. The BLL serves as the primary point of contact between the business line and the National Sales Team, including Business Development Managers.
Financial Performance & Accountability
  • Drive Business Performance
  • Oversee sales, revenue, gross margin, backlog, and utilization metrics for the CEE Business Line.
  • Monitor business performance across civil engineering, water resources, solid waste and resource recovery, decommissioning and demolition, and environmental infrastructure services.
  • Establish annual performance targets and measure progress against strategic business objectives.

Strategic Business Planning
  • Develop annual business plans and growth strategies aligned with Environmental Services and corporate objectives.
  • Identify opportunities to expand CEE services within existing and emerging infrastructure markets.
  • Evaluate investments that strengthen market competitiveness and long-term business performance.

Delivery Efficiency
  • Identify and implement initiatives that improve profitability, scalability, and operational efficiency.
  • Support investments in digital engineering, automation, AI-enabled workflows, and modern delivery methods that enhance business performance.
  • Advance scalable delivery models that leverage technology, standardized processes, and global delivery resources where appropriate.

  • Strengthen the firm's visibility and influence through active participation in organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Water Environment Federation (WEF), American Water Works Association (AWWA), Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), American Public Works Association (APWA), Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), and other organizations aligned with Burns & McDonnell's strategic markets.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor Degree in engineering, construction management or related degree from accredited program and 17 years applicable experience required.
  • 15 years of experience in civil engineering, environmental engineering, water resources, solid waste, environmental infrastructure, construction, or related consulting and engineering services preferred.
  • Prior experience on construction project sites or executing program management in the industries of aviation, commercial, energy, government, manufacturing, oil & gas, process, transmission & distribution, or water is preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in business development, client management, strategic planning, and organizational leadership preferred.
  • Strong financial acumen, strategic planning capabilities, and communication skills.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and supporting large infrastructure programs.
  • Familiarity with modern delivery approaches, digital engineering tools, AI-enabled workflows, and integrated project delivery models preferred.
  • Proven ability to develop strategic client relationships and drive sustained business growth preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding work environment, ability to work overtime on short notice.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency using Microsoft Office.

Compensation
$200,000.00-330,000.00 Yearly
The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
