Job Summary
Responsible for analyzing training needs of employee populations, developing curriculum, and delivering training, seminars, workshops, and programs. Use proven techniques to assess department and employee needs and develop appropriate training for key functions, including human resources, supervision, and administrative support. Employ appropriate measurements to determine the effectiveness of training programs and draft reports to share the results of training and make appropriate recommendations for future actions.Duties & Responsibilities
- Coordinates training programs related to employee development and supervisory skills development. Serves as moderator and lead presenter for campus-wide programs both online and in-person. Serves as a presenter for related content when necessary.
- Designs training programs using internal and external resources as appropriate, stays abreast of new trends and tools in employee development, and uses accepted education principles and tracks new training methods and techniques.
- Develops and/or conducts training for all levels of employees within the university (front-line employees, supervisors, and leadership).
- Coordinates the development of engaging online resources and training content that use videos, tutorials, infographics, polls, virtual collaboration whiteboards, and/or other interactive content delivery tools.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of training and development programs, and utilizes relevant evaluation data to revise or recommend changes to training content, objectives, and methods; creates various reports as necessary.
- Develops fluency with registration systems to assist in maintenance of curriculum database and training records.
- Chooses appropriate methods for delivery of training (simulations, online, mentoring/coaching, on-the-job training, professional development classes, etc.)
- Designs and/or oversees the production of educational aids/materials.
- Conducts needs assessment and identifies skills or knowledge gaps that need to be addressed.
- Assists with the development of departmental or campus training goals, objectives, policies, programs, and procedures.
- Provides train-the-trainer support to build the training capacity of subject-matter experts.
- Supervises student interns and extra help personnel in support of training development and execution activities.
- The position involves remaining in a stationary position for periods of time, and using dollies, carts, and rolling totes to move boxes of training supplies weighing upwards of 10 lbs.
- This position observes university campus, Civil Service, and Employee Development and Learning policies.
- The work occurs typically in an office setting, across campus, and occasionally off campus. Travel out of town within the state of Illinois may rarely occur (a University of Illinois vehicle will be provided and operation of the vehicle requires a current driver's license).
- Any one or any combination of the following, totaling four years (48 months), from the categories below:
A. credit for college training leading to a major or concentration in education or other fields related to training and development such as human resource administration or business administration or closely related fields
- 30 semester hours equals 12 months
- 60 semester hours equals 24 months
- 90 semester hours equals 36 months
- 120 semester hours or a Bachelor's Degree equals 48 months
B. credit for college training leading to a major or concentration in fields other than those previously listed
- Bachelor's Degree equals 3 years (36 months)
- Master's Degree equals 4 years (48 months)
C. work experience as a human resource or training professional - Two years of professional work experience in the training and development profession
*A Master's degree in education or other fields closely related to training and development (such as human resource administration or business administration) or a Master's degree with a concentration in these fields may be substituted for one year of such experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to design and facilitate engaging learning experiences for both in-person and virtual audiences.
- Knowledge of adult learning principles and instructional design methodologies (e.g., ADDIE).
- Experience with learning management systems such as Canvas LMS.
- Current driver's license.
- Strong communication skills.
- Strong public speaking skills.
- Working knowledge of instructional design theory and implementation.
- Ability to complete full training cycle (assess needs, plan, develop, coordinate, monitor and evaluate).
- Familiarity with traditional and modern training methods, tools, and techniques.
- MS Office skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines, approach work and projects with creativity, and work in a moderate- paced, changing environment.
- Ability to be results oriented, well organized, and systematic in approach to time and task management.
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4693 - Training and Development Specialist I position. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $75,000 annually. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
