Job description

The Department of Pediatrics at the Emory University School of Medicine, in conjunction with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, is seeking a highly motivated Post-doctoral Research Fellow to join their dynamic team under the leadership of Dr. Hanna Alemayehu MD, and in close partnership with Drs. Philip Lupo PhD and Micheal Scheurer PhD. The position will be dedicated to research in surgical outcomes across broad surgical disciplines within pediatric surgical care. 
Research
Surgical research at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta encompasses many disciplines (Anesthesia, Orthopedics, ENT, General Pediatric Surgery, Urology, Dentistry, Cardiac Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Trauma, and Adolescent gynecology), unified by a focus on surgical outcomes research, database and registry studies, clinical trials, and multi-institutional investigations, with an ultimate goal of driving improved patient care.
 

Responsibilities

  • The post-doctoral fellow will integrate into the research infrastructure of surgical services at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and the pediatric research ecosystem at Emory University.
  • Responsibilities will include conducting analyses, developing projects, writing manuscripts, participating in grant writing, attending research meetings at different surgical divisions, as well as identifying, and co-leading studies in conjunction with surgical partners.
  • The successful candidate will also attend quarterly Surgical Research Council Meetings with representatives from each surgical division and help lead the growth and development of the surgical research infrastructure.
  • The role includes project management responsibilities such as tracking key research performance indicators, managing the calendar of meetings, and management of seminars or events.
  • The position is ideal for a candidate with a solid background in quantitative and biostatistical skills, epidemiology, experience with databases and/or registries, quality improvement methodology, comparative effectiveness research, or cost-effectiveness/value-based care research.
  • The successful candidate will also have a proven ability to work with busy clinicians (preferably surgeons, anesthesiologists or intensivists) and bridge silos.
  • The position will require writing of manuscripts and grant proposals.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career.
  • The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc.
  • Designs and evaluates experiments.
  • Develops new ideas that promote current research.
  • Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
  • May be responsible for operation of specific equipment.
  • May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff.
  • Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee.
  • The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available.
  • Appointments cannot exceed five years. 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field.
  • Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills.
  •  The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.
  • Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  •  Recent Ph.D. or M.D. or M.D/Ph.D. 
  • Training in epidemiology/biostatistics/Public Health or a related field  
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and mentor students and other trainees, as well as collaborate with busy clinicians
  • Experience in grant writing is preferred but not required
  • Experience with use of databases, registries, EMR datasets is preferred but not required
