Description

The Yard Foreman is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations in the lumber and materials yard. This leadership position ensures safe and efficient loading, receiving, inventory management, and team supervision. The Yard Foreman plays a critical role in maintaining a clean, organized, and customer-focused yard environment, while upholding SBSI's standards for safety, productivity, and service.

Key Responsibilities:


Team Leadership & Supervision:

  • Direct and supervise yard associates, forklift drivers, and loaders to ensure all work is performed safely and efficiently
  • Assign daily tasks and monitor productivity, accuracy, and adherence to procedures
  • Train, coach, and develop yard team members to meet operational standards
  • Foster a respectful and collaborative team environment that prioritizes safety, accountability, and service
  • Provide feedback, document performance issues, and escalate concerns to management as needed


Safety & Compliance:

  • Enforce all company safety rules and OSHA regulations, including the use of PPE and proper lifting techniques
  • Lead by example in maintaining a clean, hazard-free yard and safe equipment operation
  • Conduct daily safety meetings, forklift inspections, and site audits to identify and resolve potential risks
  • Ensure team members are properly trained and certified to operate equipment
  • Respond to accidents or near misses in accordance with company incident procedures


Yard Operations & Inventory Control:

  • Coordinate material staging, inbound and outbound shipments, and loading activities
  • Ensure proper storage, rotation, and handling of inventory to prevent damage and maintain accessibility
  • Accurately receive and inspect incoming loads for quality and quantity, reporting any discrepancies
  • Support cycle counts and inventory control efforts to minimize shrinkage and stockouts
  • Operate forklifts, front-end loaders, and other heavy equipment as needed to assist with yard activities


Customer Service & Delivery Support:

  • Oversee timely and accurate loading of delivery trucks according to ticket specifications
  • Collaborate with the dispatch and sales teams to prioritize urgent orders and special customer requests
  • Greet and assist walk-in customers and contractors with professionalism and product knowledge
  • Serve as a key point of contact for resolving yard-related service issues


Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in a building materials yard, warehouse, or distribution environment
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience strongly preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of building materials, construction supply products, and safe handling practices
  • Forklift certification and experience with material handling equipment required
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team while holding employees accountable to safety and operational standards
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 lbs., work outdoors in all weather conditions, and operate heavy machinery
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
