Trade show booth design is typically handled by graphic designers, exhibit designers, or specialized event design firms. These professionals create visual concepts, layouts, and structures to attract visitors and effectively showcase products or services. They often use design software like CAD or Adobe Creative Suite and collaborate with clients to meet branding and functional requirements.

A trade show booth worker is responsible for setting up, managing, and dismantling the booth, engaging with visitors, and promoting products or services. They should be knowledgeable about the offerings, have strong communication skills, and often use tools like presentation materials or demos. Preparation, professionalism, and the ability to answer questions effectively are key to success in this role.

What is trade show booth design?

Trade show booth design is the process of creating and organizing the layout, structure, and visual elements of a company's exhibition space at a trade show or expo. The goal is to attract attendees, effectively communicate the brand message, and encourage engagement with the company's products or services. Designers consider factors like space optimization, branding, lighting, and interactive features to make the booth stand out and meet specific marketing objectives.

What are some common challenges faced when designing trade show booths, and how can I prepare for them?

Designing trade show booths often involves balancing creative vision with practical constraints such as budget, space limitations, and strict event regulations. You may also face tight deadlines and last-minute client requests, requiring adaptability and problem-solving skills. To prepare, it's helpful to familiarize yourself with industry standards, develop strong project management abilities, and build effective communication with clients, vendors, and your team to ensure smooth collaboration throughout the design and installation process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a trade show booth designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Trade Show Booth Designer, you need expertise in spatial design, visual merchandising, and a background in graphic or industrial design, often supported by a relevant degree. Job description

About ExOne
ExOne is a global leader in industrial 3D printing, pioneering binder jetting technology for sand, metal, and ceramic applications. With operations spanning North America and Europe, ExOne serves a diverse range of industries — including automotive, aerospace, foundry, and heavy equipment — delivering both industrial 3D printing systems and on-demand parts manufacturing services.
Operating at the intersection of advanced manufacturing and digital innovation, ExOne is in an exciting phase of growth and transformation, strengthening its market presence and sharpening its customer engagement as a global, privately held company. The Canton, MI facility serves as a critical hub for U.S. operations and is central to the company's North American strategy.
The Opportunity
ExOne is seeking an Events/Marketing Specialist to plan, coordinate, and execute the trade shows, conferences, and customer site events that put our technology and our people in front of the market. This role will support broader marketing and sales-enablement efforts, including localizing marketing content for the U.S. market. This role reports to the Director of Marketing and works closely with sales, engineering, and executive leadership to make sure every event reflects the ExOne brand and drives real commercial outcomes.
This is a hands-on role that owns each event from initial booth contract through final follow-up report. The right candidate is organized, deadline-driven, and comfortable with travel.
Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and execute ExOne's presence at industry trade shows and conferences, including booth design, shipping/logistics, staffing schedules, and on-site setup and teardown.
  • Manage exhibitor contracts, floor plans, deadlines, and vendor relationships (booth builders, drayage, AV, printing, venues, caterers).
  • Coordinate travel, lodging, and shipping logistics for staff and demonstration equipment attending each event.
  • Localize marketing materials developed by ExOne's German team — brochures, spec sheets, presentations — adapting language, units, terminology, and positioning for the U.S./North American market.
  • Partner with Product Management to stay current on the product portfolio and upcoming enhancements, translating technical updates into clear internal and external communications (sales talking points, collateral updates, event messaging).
  • Support sales with up-to-date, market-ready collateral for customer meetings, trade shows, and site visits.
  • Organize customer-facing events at ExOne facilities and customer sites, including open houses, technology demonstrations, and VIP visits.
  • Partner with sales to plan events that support pipeline and account growth.
  • Coordinate on-site event logistics: catering, signage, equipment readiness, and visitor experience from arrival to departure.
  • Manage event budgets and calendars, and communicate timelines and deliverables to internal stakeholders.
  • Work with marketing to ensure consistent branding, messaging, and collateral across all events.
  • Capture leads at events and ensure timely, accurate handoff to sales for follow-up.
  • Gather post-event feedback and results, and report on ROI and lessons learned to improve future events.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 2–5 years of experience in event planning, trade show coordination, or marketing, ideally in a manufacturing, industrial, or B2B environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple events and vendors simultaneously under firm deadlines.
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally with technical teams (Product Management, Engineering) to turn product details into clear customer-facing messaging.
  • Strong organizational skills and close attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and a professional, customer-facing presence.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint) and comfort learning event management or CRM tools.
Compensation & Logistics
  • Salary range: $60,000–$65,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Onsite role based in Canton, MI.
  • Up to 25% travel required for trade shows and customer site events.
