What is a trade sales manager?

A Trade Sales Manager is a professional responsible for managing and driving sales through business-to-business (B2B) channels, such as wholesalers, retailers, and distributors. They develop sales strategies, build relationships with trade partners, and ensure products are effectively promoted and sold in the marketplace. Their role often includes analyzing market trends, setting sales targets, and leading a team of sales representatives to achieve business goals.

How does a trade sales manager typically collaborate with other departments to achieve sales targets?

A Trade Sales Manager frequently works cross-functionally, liaising with marketing, supply chain, and product teams to align sales strategies with broader business goals. They often coordinate with logistics to ensure product availability and timely delivery, and partner with marketing to develop trade promotions and campaigns. Regular communication with the finance department is also common to monitor budgets and analyze sales performance. This collaborative environment ensures that sales targets are achievable and that the team can quickly adapt to market changes or customer needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a trade sales manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Trade Sales Manager, you need strong sales acumen, industry knowledge, and experience in B2B relationship management, often supported by a degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, sales analytics tools, and sometimes product-specific certifications are typically required. Exceptional negotiation, leadership, and communication skills help you build client trust and motivate sales teams. These abilities are crucial for driving revenue growth, maintaining key partnerships, and achieving organizational sales targets.

  • Confidence building long-term relationships with clients and partners.
  • Strong understanding of the United States market, with the ability to work independently and build local networks.

Nice-to-have skills/experience:

  • Experience in furniture, interiors, home & living, design, lifestyle, or retail.
  • Existing network within United States's interior design, architecture, property, or trade community.
  • Experience planning trade events, networking sessions, or partner activations.
  • Familiarity with CRM tools, sales reporting, and pipeline management.
  • Experience with trade marketing initiatives such as EDMs, partner campaigns, or community engagement.
