Salary Range: $28.37 - $33.17

General Description:

Under the supervision of the Senior Track Inspector the Track Inspector performs the inspection, maintenance, and repair of track infrastructure to ensure compliance with safety regulations and operating standards. Assigns field crews, investigates irregularities, and supports planning and safety initiatives.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  1. Perform regular visual and manual inspections of rail tracks, switches, and related structures.
  2. Identify safety defects and initiate remedial actions to protect train movement and crew safety.
  3. Plan and schedule maintenance tasks and estimate labor requirements.
  4. Respond to incidents, weather-related alerts, and maintenance emergencies.
  5. Supervise and direct assigned track maintenance crews and activities.
  6. Review work to ensure compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and internal standards.
  7. Requisition materials and maintain accurate maintenance records.
  8. Use an asset management system to document inspections, labor, and material usage.
  9. Conduct safety audits and crew safety meetings.
  10. Recommend improvements to track inspection or maintenance processes.
  11. Use the asset management system to complete work orders, track time/materials, and upload reports.
  12. Cooperatively and efficiently performs related tasks and duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and technical support skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Strong knowledge of track inspection standards, maintenance techniques, and FRA Part 213 regulations.
  • Skilled in identifying defects and applying corrective maintenance strategies.
  • Competence with basic computer systems and reporting software.

Emotional, Psychological and Physical Requirements:

Ability to:

  • Handle emergency situations, calmly and effectively
  • Concentrate on priority tasks with frequent interruptions
  • Maintain high alert of dangers and obstacles outside of train.
  • Comply with all safety rules and instructions including the use of proper personal protective equipment
  • Work independently or as part of a team in a safety-sensitive environment.
  • Communicate clearly with team members and supervisors.
  • Maintain attention to detail and follow procedures during repetitive tasks.

Physically:

  • Bending or stooping while inspecting train tracks
  • Stand, walk, kneel, stoop, crawl, and climb frequently.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally with assistance.
  • Work from elevated surfaces using proper safety equipment.
  • Work from heights using fall protection equipment.
  • Perform duties in extreme weather and noisy environments.

Additional/Miscellaneous/Special Requirements:

  • Acceptable drug/alcohol screen and pre-employment physical (including vision and hearing requirements) results upon hire and as regularly required by PLTO’s policy for position.
  • Must obtain roadway worker certification upon hire.
  • Acceptable driving record must be maintained throughout entirety of employment.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license
  • Must be available for on-call work, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Must obtain or hold certification to inspect track in accordance with FRA 213.7.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in track maintenance.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience in a FRA-regulated railroad environment preferred.
