Toy Development information

What qualifications do you need to be a toy development professional?

A toy development professional typically needs a bachelor's degree in fields such as industrial design, engineering, or product development. Strong skills in creativity, prototyping, and knowledge of manufacturing processes are important, along with experience in CAD software and understanding safety standards for toys.

What is the difference between Toy Development vs Toy Design?

AspectToy DevelopmentToy Design
Primary FocusOverseeing the entire process from concept to production, including engineering, manufacturing, and testing.Creating the visual and conceptual design of toys, focusing on aesthetics and user experience.
Required SkillsProduct management, engineering knowledge, project coordination, understanding of manufacturing processes.Creative skills, sketching, 3D modeling, understanding of materials and ergonomics.
Work EnvironmentCollaborative with engineers, manufacturers, and marketers in toy companies or studios.Design studios, toy companies, or freelance environments focusing on conceptual work.

While toy development involves managing the entire production process, toy design concentrates on creating the toy's appearance and concept. Both roles are essential and often overlap, but toy development ensures the product is feasible and manufacturable, whereas toy design emphasizes creativity and user appeal.

  • Design and develop products across multiple toy categories, including plush, dolls, collectibles, playsets, and accessories.
  • Create compelling sketches, illustrations, renderings, and 2D and/or 3D concept models to communicate design intent.
  • Present product concepts and design solutions to Design, Marketing, Product Management, and senior leadership.
  • Collaborate effectively within a small, cross-functional team throughout the product development process.
  • Partner with external resources, including model makers, sculptors, and soft goods designers, to bring concepts to life.
  • Research consumer insights, industry trends, competitive products, and emerging technologies to inspire innovative product development.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Understanding of toy materials, manufacturing processes, and product development.
  • Familiarity with the toy development process from concept through production.
  • Knowledge of current toy trends, consumer preferences, and children's play patterns.
  • Creative, "blue-sky" thinker with the ability to transform innovative ideas into manufacturable products.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and Excel.
