Total Network Consulting information

What is total network consulting?

Total Network Consulting refers to a professional service that provides expert advice, planning, design, implementation, and ongoing support for computer networks in organizations. These consultants assess current network infrastructure, recommend improvements, and help optimize performance, security, and scalability. They may work with various network technologies, including wired and wireless networks, cloud integrations, and cybersecurity solutions. The goal is to ensure reliable, secure, and efficient communication and data transfer within an organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network consultant?

To thrive as a Network Consultant, you need a deep understanding of network infrastructure, protocols, and security, often supported by a degree in computer science or information technology and relevant work experience. Familiarity with enterprise networking hardware, network monitoring tools, and certifications such as Cisco CCNA/CCNP or CompTIA Network+ is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills are crucial for working with diverse clients and teams. These skills ensure you can design, implement, and troubleshoot robust network solutions that meet client needs and industry standards.

What are the common challenges faced by consultants in total network consulting roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Total Network Consulting often encounter challenges such as keeping up with rapidly evolving network technologies, balancing multiple client projects simultaneously, and resolving complex network issues under tight deadlines. To address these challenges, consultants should prioritize continuous learning through certifications and industry updates, develop strong project management skills, and foster effective communication with both technical teams and clients. Building collaborative relationships within the consulting team also helps share expertise and distribute workloads efficiently.

Itron is seeking a strategic and technically sophisticated Solution Architect (SA) to lead solution definition and architecture strategy throughout the sales process. This role combines solution architecture, consultative selling, and utility industry expertise to develop integrated offerings that align customer objectives, technical requirements, and commercial outcomes. The ideal candidate brings strong solution storytelling, broad architectural awareness, and a deep understanding of utility technologies including AMI, Grid Edge Intelligence, and Intelligent Network Connectivity.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Own the technical solution strategy for assigned pursuits, ensuring alignment between customer goals, pricing, commercial strategy, and delivery feasibility.
  • Partner with Enterprise and Client Executives to shape opportunities, expand solution scope, and drive Total Contract Value (TCV) growth.
  • Develop and communicate Level 1 (platform-wide) and Level 2 (use-case-specific) architectures that clearly articulate customer value and business outcomes.
  • Translate customer needs into solution narratives using use-case mapping, architecture design, and value-based storytelling.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to technical, operational, and executive stakeholders throughout the sales process.
  • Lead solution positioning for Grid Edge Intelligence, AMI 2.0, and Intelligent Network Connectivity initiatives.
  • Evaluate alternative technologies and competitive approaches to effectively communicate Itron's differentiation and value.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure solution accuracy, feasibility, and seamless transition from sales to delivery.
  • Contribute to reusable solution assets, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement of solution architecture practices.
  • Demonstrate customer-centric, collaborative, accountable, agile, authentic, and innovative leadership in all customer and internal engagements.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in solution architecture, technical pre-sales, product management, consulting, or related roles within the utility, telecommunications, or enterprise technology industries.
  • Proven ability to develop and communicate complex solution architectures across multiple technologies, deployment models, and partner ecosystems.
  • Experience translating customer business challenges into technically sound solutions with measurable business value.
  • Strong understanding of AMI, Grid Edge Intelligence, Meter Data Management Systems (MDMS), data platforms, and utility communications technologies.
  • Experience with solution scoping, Statements of Work (SOWs), and cross-functional solution development.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills with the ability to engage technical and executive audiences.
  • Demonstrated success working collaboratively across sales, product, engineering, and delivery organizations.
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Experience supporting electric, gas, or water utilities.
  • Subject matter expertise in Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS).
  • Experience with AMI 2.0, grid modernization, or digital utility transformation initiatives.
  • Understanding of utility regulatory environments and business case development.
  • Knowledge of cellular, RF mesh, and hybrid utility networking technologies.
  • Experience supporting large, complex sales pursuits and strategic customer engagements.
