Job description

Job Title: Controls Engineer

Location: Cullman, AL

The Controls Engineer is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving equipment control systems to support safe, efficient, and high-quality manufacturing processes. This role supports production, continuous improvement initiatives, new model launches, and new equipment installations. Position level (Level 1 or Level 2) is determined based on experience, technical capability, and demonstrated proficiency.


Position LevelsControls Engineer – Level 1 (Technician | 1+ Years Experience)

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot PLC logic across various makes and models to support production equipment.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics to diagnose controls-related machine issues.
  • Maintain accurate backups of all equipment programs, including PLCs, HMIs, robots, and memory cards.
  • Perform PLC, HMI, and robotic troubleshooting to minimize downtime.
  • Support the development and implementation of Safety, Quality, and Production countermeasures.
  • Assist support departments during emergency downtime situations.
  • Remotely assist other Topre facilities with controls-related troubleshooting as needed.
  • Log daily and weekly activity in required reports.
  • Complete assigned duties on schedule while meeting safety and quality expectations.
  • Assist leadership with basic budgeting and scheduling decisions related to controls work.

Controls Engineer – Level 2 (Senior Technician | 3+ Years Experience)

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform all Level 1 responsibilities.
  • Assist with PLC and HMI logic development and program modifications.
  • Assist with electrical schematic updates and modifications using CAD software.
  • Support robot program development and optimization.
  • Lead or support projects involving equipment modifications, upgrades, and new installations.
  • Coordinate with outside and third-party contractors on controls-related projects.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting support across multiple Topre facilities.
  • Travel to other U.S. Topre facilities when required (generally <10%).

Core Responsibilities (All Levels)
  • Read and understand electrical schematics.
  • Update and develop electrical schematics using CAD software.
