Located 45 minutes from the Nation's Capital, nestled in a history rich community of Southern Maryland, the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is twice recognized by the Aspen Institute as one of America's top 150 community colleges. CSM is among America's top 100 producers of Minority Associate Degrees in over twenty categories, according to Diverse Issues in Higher Education.
The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) believes in nurturing children's potential year-round. Kids' and Teen College at the College of Southern Maryland continues with its tradition of offering comprehensive and exciting youth programming for children ages 5 to 17 years old. It allows for the opportunity to explore their interests on a college campus while discovering themselves.
As a Counselor, the candidate will assist the instructor of a class in the day-to-day functions. This position will include working directly with the kids, helping the instructor with projects, obtaining supplies needed for class, taking kids on breaks, and making sure the classrooms are kept clean every day. We need Counselors at each campus location, La Plata, Prince Frederick, and Leonardtown. The work schedule for this position is based on the enrollments for each class. You could work up to 40 hours a week, or you could work as little as 15 hours a week. This is a Monday through Friday position.

CSM is currently accepting applications for the following positions to assist with our Kids' and Teen College Summer enrichment program.
  • Counselors (for all four campus locations; La Plata, Leonardtown, Prince Frederick & Velocity Center (Indian Head)
  • 1 Float Counselor (Counselor to travel between Leonardtown & Prince Frederick Campuses)

The College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks to ensure the safety and well-being of the college's staff and students. Final candidates for this position will be subject to the following background checks: Criminal History Check and Fingerprinting.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Have a desire to work with youth from ages 5 to 14 and to interact positively with children, parents, coordinators, other counselors, counselors in training (CIT), and Administrative personnel from diverse backgrounds.
  • Maintain a positive environment for students, parents, and the college as a whole.
  • Act as a positive role model for students and CITs.
  • Assist with the training of CITs. They are the future counselors for the Kids and Teen College program.
  • Use good judgment, patience, and understanding in all dealings with the students, parents, CITs, and administrative personnel.
  • Follow the College of Southern Maryland and Kids and Teen College's policies and procedures.
  • Attend mandatory orientation training.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all students attending Kids and Teen College summer classes.
  • Be responsible for knowing where students are at all times.
  • Guide all students in following the rules.
  • Assist instructors in his or her activities, set up and clean up every day.
  • Help students participate in activities.
  • Greet students and parents each morning and assist with sign in and sign out procedures.
  • Assist other counselors at student's lunch and breaks.
  • Report to Campus Coordinator any issues that may arise with students, CIT's, Instructors, parents or other counselors.

Minimum Education and Training
High School Senior or in College by Fall
Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
  • 17 years of age by July 1, preferred.
  • Demonstrate experience working with children preferred.
  • Detail-oriented and organized.
  • Able to follow directions, written and verbally.
  • Able to stand and bend for extended periods of time.
  • Able to move and lift 40 lbs.
