Tool Development Engineer information

What is a tool development engineer?

Tool Development Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain tools, software, or equipment used to optimize production processes or support engineering teams. Their responsibilities often include understanding user requirements, creating prototypes, testing tools, and improving existing solutions to enhance efficiency and quality. They work closely with manufacturing, software, or hardware teams, depending on the industry. Tool Development Engineers play a critical role in increasing productivity and ensuring the reliability of tools used in various technical environments.

What are some common challenges faced by tool development engineers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Tool Development Engineers often work closely with software developers, QA testers, and product managers to create and refine tools. A common challenge is balancing differing priorities, such as development speed versus tool robustness or user-friendliness. Effective communication and flexibility are key to understanding and addressing the unique needs of each team. Regular feedback sessions and clear documentation help ensure that the tools developed meet the evolving requirements of all stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tool development engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tool Development Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, programming languages (such as Python, C++, or Java), and a relevant degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, version control systems, and automation tools, as well as certifications in relevant frameworks, are typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable collaboration and innovative tool design. These competencies are crucial for developing efficient, reliable tools that optimize engineering workflows and support organizational productivity.

What is the difference between Tool Development Engineer vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectTool Development EngineerManufacturing Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning, developing, and optimizing tools and equipment used in manufacturing processesPlanning, implementing, and improving manufacturing processes and workflows
Skills & CertificationsMechanical design, CAD, problem-solving, certifications like Six Sigma or LeanProcess engineering, project management, certifications like Six Sigma or Lean
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, manufacturing plants, R&D facilitiesFactories, production lines, plant floor
Industry UsageCommon in automotive, aerospace, electronics manufacturingWidely used across various manufacturing sectors including consumer goods and industrial equipment

While both roles support manufacturing operations, the Tool Development Engineer primarily focuses on creating and improving tools and equipment, whereas the Manufacturing Engineer concentrates on optimizing entire production processes. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description

Job Purpose:

BTIG seeks a hands-on Software Development Engineer in TEST (SDET) in Technology Quality Management team to generate, execute, debug, and maintain automated tests across critical workflows. Reporting to the Head of QA, you will own test suites, improve reliability, investigate failures, and provide clear quality evidence to support daily engineering decisions. You will work on a lean, hands-on team where ownership, judgment, and follow-through matter.

You will also work with and improve OpenCode-based skills and frameworks that accelerate test engineering workflows. Prior hands-on experience with terminal/TUI agentic tools applied to real test engineering is required.

This position is open only in our New York City or San Francisco offices, with a minimum requirement of working 4+ days per week in-office and Eastern Time Zone hours.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain Playwright and TypeScript-based automated tests across UI, API, integration, and regression coverage areas
  • Translate product requirements, defects, and API specifications into reliable automated test cases
  • Investigate flaky or failing tests, identify root causes, and produce reproducible defect evidence
  • Design and maintain OpenCode-based agent workflows for test generation, failure triage, regression selection
  • Apply context engineering and cost-efficiency strategies without weakening verification quality
  • Develop and maintain test data approaches, including fixtures, synthetic data, and environment-safe datasets for repeatable automation
  • Integrate automation into CI/CD pipelines with reliable gating, clear failure reporting, and retained test artifacts

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • 3+ years hands-on SDET experience with demonstrated ownership of automated tests across UI, API, contract, integration, and regression layers
  • Strong hands-on experience with Playwright and TypeScript, including fixtures, traces, parallel execution, and CI artifact analysis
  • Experience using AI-assisted development or test tools in terminal, CLI, or editor-based workflows (OpenCode, Claude Code, Codex, etc.); proven ability to critically review and correct agent-generated tests, commands, and code
  • Working knowledge of agent architecture: primary/subagents, scoped tool permissions, repo memory, model routing, and human-in-the-loop review
  • CI/CD integration experience (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or equivalent)
  • API testing fundamentals: REST, OpenAPI, contract testing, auth/authz boundaries, and negative-path validation
  • Strong debugging discipline for test failures, flaky behavior, and application defects
  • Nice to have: performance, load, or chaos engineering exposure; open-source contributions to test or agentic tooling; Financial services or regulated environment experience

Important Notes:

  • Must be authorized to work full time in the U.S., BTIG does not offer sponsorship for work visas of any type
  • No phone calls please, the applicant will be contacted within two weeks if successful
