Position Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Plant Metallurgist is to provide technical leadership and metallurgical/materials expertise for the Lebanon Plant and its full product range. The Plant Metallurgist acts as the plant’s technical expert to initiate and execute materials engineering activities and make final decisions on product quality and shipment. This position serves as the plant liaison to the Chief Materials Engineer, ADPC, and leads customer interactions, external certifications (e.g., NADCAP), and ensures compliance with Timken standards including: 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Quality Management System
    • Lead certification reviews for steel, forging and heat treatment; resolve metallurgical quality issues and report plant results per Global Materials Quality (GMQ).
    • Oversee the in-plant metallurgical laboratory and ensure operational responsibility.
    • Ensure and audit daily usage of the Material Certification Database (MCD); manage incoming inspection metallurgical results.
    • Develop and maintain the Plant Metallurgical Process Manual.
    • Submit samples for heat treat and steel cleanness audits; analyze data to prevent issues.
    • Own plant metallurgical quality, including corrective actions for internal and external audit items.
    • Document and escalate supplier steel concerns; create, modify, interpret and communicate material, forging, heat treatment and casting standards and specifications for plant, outsource service suppliers and customers.
    • Ensure compliance with corporate standards and coordinate metallurgical/material deviation requests.
  • Consulting and Problem Solving
    • Serve as technical consultant for customer and plant processing issues; analyze complex, multi-factor problems and develop optimal solutions.
    • Utilize and advise on advanced metallurgical test equipment (mechanical testing, X-ray, ultrasonic, SEM, etc.).
    • Assist technicians with complex equipment analysis and recommend test programs for customer/supplier issues.
  • Project Management
    • Plan and lead technical efforts for heat treat, forging, casting and bearing material development within plant operations.
    • Conduct and coordinate periodic metallurgical/material internal audits with quality and PMM.
    • Provide technical direction for evaluating and implementing new or modified heat treat processes.
    • Support product metallurgical and material quality issues in-plant and at customer sites, secondary to the Chief Materials Engineer - ADPC.
    • Lead laboratory personnel and engage in customer discussions related to metallurgical/material quality.
    • Develop and deliver training for metallurgical associates and plant personnel covering corporate, customer, NADCAP and plant material science requirements.
  • Metallurgical/Materials Leadership
    • Plan and lead technical efforts for heat treat, forging, casting and bearing material development within plant operations.
    • Conduct and coordinate periodic metallurgical/material internal audits with quality and PMM.
    • Provide technical direction for evaluating and implementing new or modified heat treat processes.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Engineering or other technical field.
  • Skilled in laboratory evaluation of material properties.
  • Strong knowledge of heat treatment and metal forming processes.
  • Detailed knowledge of special metallurgical tools.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • Master’s or PHD degree of Materials/Metallurgical Engineering.
  • Experience in bearing heat treat processing. 
  • Project management skills and ability to lead large multi-discipline projects.
  • Experience in industrial production areas.
  • Experience with bearing failure analysis.
