What is timber procurement?

Timber procurement is the process of sourcing, purchasing, and managing the supply of timber from forests or suppliers for use in manufacturing, construction, or other industries. It involves evaluating and selecting sustainable and legal sources, negotiating contracts, ensuring quality standards, and coordinating logistics. Professionals in timber procurement also work to comply with environmental regulations and may be responsible for maintaining certifications such as FSC or PEFC.

Timber purchasing is more focused on the transactional aspect of buying timber products. While both roles require knowledge of the industry, procurement emphasizes planning and supplier relationships, whereas purchasing centers on executing purchase transactions.

To thrive as a Timber Procurement Specialist, you need strong knowledge of forestry practices, supply chain management, and relevant environmental regulations, often supported by a degree in forestry, natural resources, or a related field. Effective negotiation skills and the ability to adapt quickly to supply chain disruptions are also crucial for success in this role.
