What is a Timber Engineering job?

A Timber Engineering job involves designing, analyzing, and constructing structures using timber and wood-based materials. Timber engineers ensure structural integrity, sustainability, and compliance with building codes. They work on projects like bridges, buildings, and prefabricated wood components, often collaborating with architects and construction teams. This role requires knowledge of material properties, load calculations, and advanced design techniques to maximize the efficiency and durability of wood-based structures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Timber Engineering position, and why are they important?

To excel in Timber Engineering, you need a solid background in structural engineering, materials science, and design, usually supported by a degree in civil or structural engineering and relevant professional registration. Familiarity with engineering software such as AutoCAD, SAP2000, and wood design codes (e.g., Eurocode 5 or NDS) is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and project management skills are key soft skills that enable success in this role. These competencies ensure that timber structures are designed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards while fostering productive teamwork.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Timber Engineer?

Timber Engineers are responsible for designing, analyzing, and specifying timber structures such as buildings, bridges, or frameworks, often collaborating closely with architects, contractors, and other engineers. Their day-to-day work may include preparing detailed drawings, conducting structural calculations, selecting suitable wood materials, and ensuring all designs comply with relevant codes and standards. They also visit sites to inspect project progress and address technical challenges that may arise during construction. This variety makes each day dynamic and allows for the direct application of problem-solving skills and creativity in real-world projects.

  • Providing engineering reports to clients, structural advice on the construction and design of projects and devising modifications as necessary.
  • Performing concept level and detailed structural design and detailing, including calculations, sketches, and static/dynamic finite element modelling in both pre construction and construction phases, under the mentorship of the Engineering Manager.
  • Liaising with internal project management, shop, and site teams to ensure projects are delivered on time and budget, and meet fabrication and erection constraints.
  • Visiting mass timber project sites across North America (remote or in-person when possible) to conduct field reviews and work with our install team on the ground at each project.
  • Reviewing project requirements to provide estimates on quantities and costs of materials, equipment and labor and input on construction and development budgets.
  • Mentoring junior structural engineers and developing our technical knowledge base.
  • Providing engineering reports to clients and structural advice on the construction and design of projects and devising modifications as necessary.
