How much do tig welder jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for tig welder in the United States is $23.06, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.71 and $25.48 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a TIG welder?

TIG welders are skilled tradespeople who use Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding to join metal parts together, primarily using a non-consumable tungsten electrode and a shielding gas, often argon. TIG welding is valued for its precision and ability to produce clean, high-quality welds on a variety of metals, including stainless steel and aluminum. TIG welders work in industries such as manufacturing, construction, automotive, and aerospace, often interpreting blueprints and ensuring welds meet strict specifications. This role requires careful hand-eye coordination, attention to detail, and knowledge of safety procedures.

What does a TIG welder do?

A TIG (tungsten inert gas) welder is a welding professional who specializes in using TIG arc welding equipment. A welder is someone who is highly skilled at joining pieces of metal for construction and manufacturing purposes. These joints must be very strong and highly accurate. A TIG welder uses an arc welder fueled by tungsten inert gas to perform a process known as GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding). This is usually used to join thin, non-ferrous metals, like stainless steel.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a TIG welder?

To thrive as a TIG Welder, you need in-depth knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, and blueprint reading, often supported by a vocational certificate or welding certification. Proficiency with TIG welding machines, precision measuring tools, and safety equipment is essential. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and a strong work ethic are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are critical for producing high-quality, safe welds and maintaining efficiency in demanding fabrication environments.

What are some typical challenges TIG welders face on the job, and how can they be addressed?

Tig Welders often encounter challenges such as maintaining precise control over the welding torch and filler material, especially when working with thin metals or complex joint configurations. Achieving consistent weld quality requires a steady hand and attention to detail, as well as an understanding of different metal types and their reactions to heat. To overcome these challenges, welders can benefit from ongoing training, using proper protective equipment, and collaborating closely with engineering and fabrication teams to clarify project specifications. Regular practice and adherence to safety procedures also help ensure high-quality results and a safer work environment.

What is the difference between Tig Welder vs Arc Welder?

AspectTig WelderArc Welder
CertificationsCertified Welding Inspector (CWI), AWS certificationsAWS certifications, often less specialized
Work EnvironmentPrecise, clean environments, often in aerospace, automotive, or pipe weldingIndustrial settings, construction sites, heavy manufacturing
Welding ProcessTungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding, uses a tungsten electrode and inert gasShielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), uses a consumable electrode and flux coating
Skill LevelRequires high precision and steady handVaries from beginner to advanced, often more physically demanding

Both Tig Welders and Arc Welders are essential in the welding industry, but they differ mainly in the welding process, environment, and skill requirements. Tig welding offers precision for detailed work, while arc welding is more versatile for heavy-duty applications.

Do TIG welders make good money?

TIG welders can earn competitive wages, with salaries often ranging from $40,000 to over $70,000 annually depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled welders with certifications and specialized tools tend to earn higher pay, especially in manufacturing, construction, or aerospace sectors.

How much can a TIG welder get paid?

TIG welders typically earn between $20 and $40 per hour, with annual salaries ranging from approximately $40,000 to $80,000 depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled welders with certifications and experience in specialized materials or industries can earn higher wages.

Is there a demand for TIG welders?

TIG welders are in steady demand across industries such as aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing due to their precision welding skills. Employment opportunities are expected to grow as companies seek skilled welders with certifications and experience in using TIG welding equipment. Job prospects are generally favorable for those with specialized training and a strong work ethic.
