Job description

Job Summary

The Thrift Store Assistant Manager supports the Thrift Store Manager with the planning, administering, monitoring, and evaluation of the day-to-day operations of the Thrift Store with a limited staff ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures; serves as the lead manager when the Thrift  Store Manager is not on Thrift Store property; processes, displays, and approves the pricing of donated items to ensure a reasonable financial return on the sale of store items; assists customers in a polite and friendly manner; prepares store displays that are attractive, neat, and orderly; ensures store merchandise is rotated and re-stocked using established guidelines; ensures the accountability and security of all store items and funds; ensures the proper training of all Thrift Store employees; serves as a lead worker to volunteers, and/or subordinate Thrift Store personnel.

Store Management (80%)

  • Works closely with the Family Store Manager by performing any or all the following duties.
  • Administers and monitors the day-to-day operations of a small Thrift Store.
  • Serves as the lead worker to volunteers and subordinate Thrift Store personnel.
  • Trains and instructs staff and volunteers in the proper methods and procedures of Family Store operations.
  • Inspects all work performed by staff and volunteers to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Plans, supervises, and participates in the layout and display of store merchandise.
  • Ensures all Thrift Store stock is routinely rotated and ensures that pricing encourages the desired level of stock turnover.
  • Plans, organizes, and supervises the preparation of displays for special promotions including seasonal merchandise.
  • Notifies warehouse personnel of low stock items.
  • Supervises and participates in the receiving, sorting, pricing, and distribution of donated items in the warehouse.
  • Ensures that items are processed in a timely manner and in compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ensures the accountability of all donated items.
  • Ensures donations are collected in compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assists customers purchasing items from The Salvation Army by ringing up sales utilizing a cash register.

Other Responsibilities (20%)

  • Places and arranges items in the store as directed by the Thrift Store Manager or Divisional Director of Service Extension.
  • Checks all store displays to ensure that all items are maintained and displayed in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Return store stock to the proper rack or shelve area after customers have handles or moved items.
  • Opens and/or closes store doors in accordance with the Thrift Store daily schedule of operation.
  • Maintains an up-to-date record of all Thrift Store vendors, including Textile vendors.
  • Maintains a secure file of all communications between the Divisional Director of Service Extension and Thrift Store personnel.
  • Maintains a secure and up-to-date emergency contact information sheet for all Thrift Store personnel, ensuring the Office Manager and the Divisional Director of Service Extension have the most up-to-date copy of the contact information.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment for both Thrift Store and Warehouse operations.
  • Routinely inspect all Thrift Store property and equipment to ensure the safety of Thrift Store personnel and customers.
  • Assist in Emergency Disaster Services relief projects as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis. 
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull, and reach overhead. 
  • Ability to operate telephone.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to understand written information.
  • Qualified individuals must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation. 

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a normal Thrift Store/retail store environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather.  There may be occasion when discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like are encountered.

Special activities, including but not limited to, special outreach events and/or special Thrift Store programs may require additional work hours. 

A detailed work schedule will be approved by the Thrift Store Manager.

The Thrift Store Assistant Manager will stay on property during his/her work hours unless official duties otherwise require his/her absence.

Education and Experience

High School diploma or G.E.D.

Two years progressively responsible experience working in a retail store environment.

At least one year experience in a supervisory capacity within a retail store environment OR

Any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
