Work Hours: Monday to Friday, 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM

About the Role:
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the College's visual standards by ensuring that restrooms, hallways, classrooms, and other areas are consistently clean and well-maintained. In addition to regular cleaning duties, this position will support campus facilities by assisting with logistics and grounds maintenance as needed.
Required Skills & Competencies:
Physical Requirements
  • Lifting and Carrying:
    • Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance. Heavier lifting or movement tasks should be done with assistance.
  • Stair and Ladder Use:
    • Move safely up and down stairs, service ramps, and/or ladders as part of the work.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Must be able to travel to various campus buildings using College vehicles.
    • Must hold or be able to obtain an Indiana driver's license.
  • Physical Stamina:
    • Must be detail-oriented, thorough, and flexible to adapt to changing tasks and environments.
    • Significant physical effort is required, including heavy lifting, bending, twisting, and working in various environmental conditions (hot and cold).

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including working on ladders, lifting over 50 lbs repetitively, twisting, bending, and working in varying environmental conditions.
  • Competence in following both oral and written instructions.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in an academic or state organization.
  • Industry-related training or certifications relevant to custodial work.

Major Responsibilities:
The following is not to be construed as an exhaustive list. Other duties logically associated with this position may be assigned. All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards.
Conduct general safety inspections of the facilities and grounds
  • Patrol assigned area and inspect the grounds for cleanliness and potential concerns.

Application of chemicals and fertilizers
  • Apply herbicides and pesticides as needed.

Maintaining and prepping mulch beds across campus
  • Weeding, herbicide treatments, and replace mulch as needed.

Planting and caring of trees and shrubs
  • Installing plants withing open beds as well as the planters across campus.

Operate and maintain hand power tools and larger grounds operations equipment
  • Will use equipment ranging from small hand tools to large ride on equipment.

Maintain existing public open space areas
  • Check trash cans and collect trash in all outdoor public spaces.

Maintain daily report records and work orders
  • Gas receipts as well as daily work logs.

Seasonal work such as snow removal, aeration, and weeding
  • Work is performed during all seasons and all types of weather.

Provide back up in various areas of the department when needed
  • Mail room, Copy room, Shipping and Receiving, custodial, events, etc.

Event set-up/clean-up
  • Periodic outdoor events throughout the year.

Responsible for the loading and unloading of trucks as necessary.
  • Expected to assist in unloading of grounds deliveries and equipment.

Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A valid driver's license and insurance coverage as required by the College's insurance carrier.
