The organization plants more than 6,500 trees each year grown at our own nursery; cares and maintains those trees; conserves greenspace; conducts school and community-based youth STEM programming; and advocates for stronger policies and laws to preserve trees across the area. Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for the fiscal health of the organization, the strategic growth of its philanthropic revenue, and external communications. Reporting to the Executive Director and serving as a senior member of the leadership team, the CFO brings equal discipline and creativity to managing our finances and advancing our fundraising, communications, and donor engagement programs.

This integrated role reflects our organizational commitment to aligning resources with mission. The CFO partners closely with the Board, program leaders, and external stakeholders to ensure Casey Trees is financially sustainable, donor-connected, and well-positioned for long-term impact.

We are seeking a collaborative, mission-aligned leader who has the breadth to cut across disciplines and is as comfortable analyzing a cash flow forecast as cultivating a major donor relationship as well as initiating a promotional campaign. The CFO oversees Finance, Human Resources, Administration, Communications, and Development Operations, ensuring these functions operate efficiently, collaboratively, and in alignment with Casey Trees strategic priorities.

Essential Functions: Financial Strategy & Leadership
  • Serves as a strategic thought partner to the Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer, and Board of Directors on all financial matters, including growth strategy, sustainability planning, and risk management.
  • Develops and maintains a multi-year financial model that incorporates revenue projections, programmatic investments, and capital needs.
  • Advises on organizational and programmatic decisions through a financial lens, including new initiatives, partnerships, and earned revenue opportunities.
  • Represent the organization's financial health to funders, auditors, the Board of Directors, and other key stakeholders.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Accounting
  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer, senior leadership team, and program directors.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reports, variance analyses, and forecasts for various audiences and stakeholders.
  • Oversee all accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and month-end close processes.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal and state nonprofit regulations, and funder-specific requirements including OMB Uniform Guidance and 2 CFR Part 200 for federal awards.
  • Manage the annual financial audit and tax filings (Form 990), serving as the primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Monitor cash flow, liquidity, and reserves; maintain a strong cash management strategy.
  • Maintain and implement strong internal controls, cost allocation methodology, and financial policies.
Fundraising Strategy, Revenue Development, & Grants/Contracts Management
  • Develop and lead the implementation of a comprehensive annual and multi-year fundraising strategy in partnership with the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer.
  • Oversee the full organizational development cycle: prospect research, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and renewal across individual, foundation, corporate, and government revenue streams.
  • Partner with the Development and Program teams to prepare grant budgets, financial reports, and compliance documentation for foundation, government, and corporate funders.
  • Track restricted and unrestricted funding, ensuring accurate allocation and timely reporting to funders.
  • Monitor grant expenditures against budgets, flagging variances and collaborating on reforecasts.
  • Set and track annual revenue targets across all contributed income channels; report progress to the Executive Director and Board.
Donor Relations & Stewardship
  • Build and sustain deep relationships with major donors, family foundations, and institutional funders aligned with the mission of Casey Trees.
  • Design and implement a donor stewardship program that deepens engagement, recognizes giving, and increases retention.
  • Manage a portfolio of major donors and institutional funders, serving as a relationship manager and solicitor for key gifts.
  • Support the Executive Director and Board members in donor cultivation and solicitation, including briefing materials, talking points, and follow-up.
Communications & External Relations
  • Oversee the organizational communications strategy, including brand voice, digital presence, email, paid media marketing, social media, and publications.
  • Supervise and develop external communications including the annual report, donor newsletters, impact reports, fundraising appeals, and the weekly newsletter.
  • Ensure alignment between external messaging, programmatic priorities, and fundraising narratives that are appropriate for requisite audiences.
  • Manage and facilitate relationships with communications consultants, designers, and public relations partners as applicable.
  • Develops and promotes Casey Trees’ image with partner organizations locally, regionally and nationally.
Operations & Administration Leadership
  • Lead, supervise, and guide the Finance, Human Resources, Administrative, Communications, and Development team and a cohort of consultants, contractors, and vendors across disciplines.
  • Oversee and deploy human resources across the organization with operations in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC including compensation and benefits, hiring and onboarding, employee engagement, and compliance.
  • Manage organizational insurance portfolios, vendor contracts, and facilities for a robust portfolio of operational structures and properties across the national capital region.

Working Conditions
  • The incumbent typically works in an office setting using Computers, Printers, Copiers, Telephones, Smartphones, Tablets and related equipment/devices.
Physical Demands:
  • While this is primarily a desk job, all CT employees may engage in tree planting/related activities in outdoor environments, year-round in the heat, cold and inclement weather and must have suitable clothing. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time exempt position. The incumbent must be able and willing to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours when needed.

Travel

Travel is primarily local to the greater Washington, DC metro area including daily and overnight travel to Casey Tree Farm in Berryville, VA. Occasional travel out of the area for training/seminars/events, etc., requiring overnight stay may be expected.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Management, or related field. Preference for candidates with a CPA, CMA, and/or MBA.
  • 8-10+ years of progressive financial management experience with at least 3 years of experience in a senior leadership role, preferably in the nonprofit sector
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, grant management, and compliance requirements including GAAP, nonprofit standards, and federal OMB Uniform Guidance compliance.
  • Knowledge of and ability to learn processes and legal requirements related to organizational finances and management of resources (personnel, budgets, etc).
  • Familiarity with environmental, conservation, and/or advocacy nonprofits.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising, managing and inspiring teams.
  • Strong skills in presenting clear and accurate financial reports.
  • Strong communications skills to effectively represent Casey Trees in public or media interviews and meetings, and in written materials such as articles, memorandums and correspondence with partner organizations, volunteers, and other
