What is a third engineer?

A Third Engineer, also known as a Third Assistant Engineer, is a licensed member of the engineering department on a merchant ship. They are responsible for operating and maintaining machinery in the engine room, including boilers, generators, and pumps. Third Engineers typically report to the Second Engineer and assist in routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and emergency repairs to ensure the vessel operates safely and efficiently. They also keep records of engine performance and fuel consumption as part of their daily duties.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a third engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Third Engineer, you need a solid grounding in marine engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and a valid Certificate of Competency. Familiarity with shipboard machinery, maintenance management systems, and safety protocols, as well as proficiency in using diagnostic and monitoring tools, is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help you respond quickly to technical issues and coordinate with the ship's crew. These skills ensure the vessel operates safely and efficiently, minimizing downtime and supporting overall maritime operations.

What are some common challenges faced by third engineers working on commercial vessels?

Third Engineers often manage the operation and maintenance of a ship’s machinery under the guidance of senior engineers. Common challenges in this role include troubleshooting unexpected mechanical failures, adapting to rapidly changing weather or sea conditions, and ensuring compliance with strict safety and environmental regulations. Additionally, Third Engineers must effectively coordinate with multinational crews and work in shifts, which can demand flexibility and strong communication skills. Overcoming these challenges helps build valuable experience for advancement to higher engineering positions.

Success Matcher Recruitment

San Francisco, CA • On-site

Full-time

Job description

About the role

Success Matcher Recruitment is partnering with our client, the leading shared housing platform that has cracked the code on co-living and is poised for nationwide scale, to hire an entrepreneurial Founding Product Engineer in San Francisco.

As the third engineering hire, you will work directly with the CTO and Backend Lead to own the "last mile" of product delivery. You will take new products from concept to launch end-to-end. This is a role for a hungry, product-minded builder who leverages modern AI tools, moves fast, and wants to shape the front-end architecture of a platform expanding 5-10x in the coming years.

What You Will Do

  • Own UI Delivery: Build intuitive, high-impact interfaces for our client's core products given REST APIs and business requirements.
  • Drive Product Decisions: Collaborate directly with leadership and stakeholders to discover user problems, internalize business contexts, and build solutions independently.
  • Shape Design & APIs: Partner with backend engineers on API contracts while owning front-end design and implementation (leveraging AI design tools like Claude Design).
  • Expand Scope Over Time: Grow into full-stack feature ownership, React Native mobile app development, and product marketing initiatives.

What You Bring

  • Experience: 3+ years of software engineering experience with a strong focus on building sharp, user-centric interfaces in TypeScript and React ecosystems.
  • Mindset: Entrepreneurial and product-obsessed. You have to think deeply about business and user problems, not just the code you ship.
  • AI-First Approach: Enthusiastic about using AI-assisted development tools (Cursor, Copilot, Claude) to move fast and bridge design gaps.
  • Presence: Excited to work collaboratively in person 5 days a week in the Financial District, San Francisco.

Why Join?

  • Ownership: Meaningful equity (0.3%+) in a proven, high-growth platform.
  • Strong Backing: Raised $13M from top-tier investors.
  • Financial Health: Strong fundamentals with 7-figure ARR and contribution margin-positive profitability.
  • Growth: Direct path to leadership and massive ownership as the engineering team scales.
