What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Therapy Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Therapy Intern, you typically need foundational knowledge in psychology or counseling, enrollment in or completion of a relevant graduate program, and basic clinical skills. Familiarity with documentation software, teletherapy platforms, and adherence to ethical and legal standards is important. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and active listening help interns build rapport and learn from both clients and supervisors. These abilities are crucial for providing effective support to clients while developing professional competence in a supervised learning environment.

What types of supervision and support can therapy interns typically expect during their internship?

Therapy interns are usually assigned a licensed clinical supervisor who provides ongoing guidance, feedback, and evaluation throughout the internship. Supervision often includes weekly individual or group meetings where interns can discuss cases, ethical issues, and professional development. Interns may also participate in team meetings and case consultations, working collaboratively with other mental health professionals. This supportive structure is designed to help interns build clinical skills, ensure client safety, and prepare for independent practice.
