Job Description
Location: Kellogg Center State Room
Wage: $14.00 per hour
*Due to the minimum wage increase at MSU, the starting rate for this position is going to be $16 effective 8/9/26. Those hired prior to 8/9/26 will also be brought to the new minimum on this effective date.
Desired working hours 4 pm - 10 pm Thursday - Saturday with the possibility of differing shifts during football and busy State Room events.
As a Student Food Service Assistant, you will be responsible for assisting full-time staff members with the preparation, cooking and plating food for the State Room Restaurant, helping prepare appetizers, entrees, starches, vegetables and other items. You must also be knowledgeable of all relevant food safety regulations, standards and guidelines to ensure the safe handling and serving of all meals to customers. It is your job to make sure the guests of Culinary Services receive the most outstanding customer service
Typical duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Cooking, preparing and plating food at the Kellogg Center State Room restaurant
  • Kitchen clean up after meals are served
  • Communicate with supervisors, managers and other student team members
  • Coordinate with the supervisor's job tasks that need to be completed each shift
  • Other duties as assigned

* This position does not have a set schedule, and times may vary depending on the needs of the company
Required Qualifications
• Be enrolled as a student at Michigan State University (during academic year)
• Demonstrated commitment to outstanding customer service
• Must be able to complete tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision
• Must be positive and respectful, especially when working with a diverse population
• Be able to work nights, early mornings and/or weekends
Preferred Qualifications
  • Serve Safe or other food safety certification
  • Experience cooking or working in a high-volume food service operation.

Physical Demands
• Must be able to move up to 20 pounds.
Work Hours
• Must be able to work varied shifts, including early mornings (possible start 6:00AM), nights (until 10 PM) and weekends
• During the school year domestic student employees may not work more than 29 hours per work week, and international student employees may not work more than 20 hours per work week
• During school breaks, between semesters, and during summer semester, all student employees are permitted to work up to 40 hours per work week.
