Job description

Shop Operator
Department: Product Testing & QC
Reports to: Lead, Product Testing & QC

Role Overview

Ensure safe, traceable, and repeatable preparation, treatment, handling, and storage of materials used in Product Performance and Product Testing, including execution of defined treatment plans using lab mills and reactors.

Key Responsibilities

Material Identification & Traceability

  • Locate and retrieve materials designated for testing or treatment

  • Verify material ID, batch/lot number, and test request

  • Log material movement and status in the designated tracking spreadsheet/system

  • Maintain chain-of-custody from storage through testing and return/disposal

Material Treatment Execution (Lab Mills / Reactors)

  • Review and follow approved treatment plans provided by Product Performance or Product Testing teams

  • Load materials into lab mills or reactors per defined parameters (e.g., mass, residence time, speed, additives)

  • Operate equipment in accordance with SOPs and safety requirements

  • Monitor treatment progress and flag deviations or abnormalities

  • Unload treated materials and prepare them for downstream testing or storage

Digital & Physical Record-keeping

  • Complete required digital treatment forms (e.g., material ID, treatment parameters, equipment used, date/time, operator)

  • Ensure records are complete, accurate, and auditable

  • Label treated materials clearly with updated identifiers and treatment history

Equipment Cleaning & Changeover

  • Clean mills and reactors according to approved cleaning procedures

  • Prevent cross-contamination between materials and test campaigns

  • Verify equipment cleanliness prior to next use

  • Dispose of waste materials in accordance with safety and environmental procedures

Routine Equipment Maintenance

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks for lab mills and reactors (e.g., inspections, lubrication, wear checks)

  • Maintain maintenance logs and report issues requiring escalation

  • Coordinate downtime with lab scheduling and Materials Testing Manager

Safety, Housekeeping & Compliance

  • Follow all lab safety procedures, lockout/tagout, and PPE requirements

  • Maintain 5S standards in material storage and treatment areas

  • Support safety audits, incident reporting, and corrective actions

Required Skills & Training

  • Experience with industrial lab equipment (mills, reactors, mixers)

  • Strong attention to detail and recordkeeping discipline

  • Basic mechanical aptitude for routine maintenance

  • Safety training for lab and materials handling environments

  • Forklift certification is an asset

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Familiarity with Office 365
