Mechanical Test Engineer

Position Summary
The Mechanical Test Engineer is part of a team of engineers and technicians providing engineering and technical support to the Ranges, Engineering, and Analysis Department at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport, RI. This multi-disciplinary team is responsible for providing systems safety, environmental qualification testing, and range sustainment in support of undersea warfare systems. Candidates with education and experience in engineering fields are highly desired.
Essential Functions

  • Support Environmental Qualification Testing (EQT) including Shock, Vibration, Temperature, Humidity, Inclination, Pressure, Airborne and Structureborne noise, and Enclosure.
  • Evaluate EQT system requirements.
  • Lead test conduct, planning, instrumentation, and data capture.
  • Provide acoustic, vibration and shock data processing and analysis.
  • Review and develop test documentation including plans, procedures, and reports.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or similar discipline.
  • Two (2) years of experience supporting testing and integration.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering or similar discipline.
  • Experience specific to undersea warfare systems and/or Navy training range systems.
  • Experience with NUWC Division Newport.

Competencies
  • Strong communication skills. Ability to communicate in writing and verbally to all levels of customers and company leadership.
  • Capable of effectively working and problem-solving in both independent and team environments.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and/or maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance and required access to all worksite locations.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Excellent listening skills are essential. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may need to crouch, crawl, or climb up to six feet in support of test equipment data acquisition setup. Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs in support of test equipment setup.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
The typical workday is eight hours in length. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, with concurrence from the supervisor. Attendance at prescheduled mandatory meetings is required. Must be available during the core work hours as determined by your contract/location and must account for the required number of hours in a pay period to maintain Full-time status.
Telework:
  • This position does not allow for telework.
  • Subject to change based on business needs and customer requirements.

Travel:
  • Ability to travel CONUS; potential to travel OCONUS.
  • Travel up to 10% may be required.
