What is a test director?

A Test Director is a senior professional responsible for overseeing the strategy, planning, and execution of software testing within an organization or project. They lead testing teams, define testing standards, and ensure that products meet quality and compliance requirements before release. Test Directors collaborate with other departments, manage budgets, and report on testing progress and outcomes to stakeholders. Their role is critical in minimizing defects and ensuring the reliability and performance of software applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test director?

To thrive as a Test Director, you need extensive experience in software testing, quality assurance methodologies, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with test management tools (like Jira, HP ALM) and certifications such as ISTQB or CSTE are typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help guide teams and coordinate with stakeholders effectively. These skills are essential to ensure product quality, efficient testing processes, and the successful delivery of software projects.

What are some common challenges faced by a test director and how can they be addressed?

Test Directors often encounter challenges such as managing cross-functional teams, balancing tight project timelines with quality standards, and ensuring effective communication between stakeholders. Addressing these issues involves strong leadership, proactive risk management, and the ability to adapt testing strategies based on project needs. Regular status meetings, clear documentation, and fostering a culture of collaboration can help mitigate these challenges and drive successful testing outcomes.

Job description

Merge medical imaging solutions, offered by Merative, combine intelligent, scalable imaging workflow tools with deep and broad expertise to help healthcare organizations improve their confidence in patient outcomes and optimize care delivery.
This position owns the test and verification activities for our PACS systems, and the documentation that evidences them. The role is accountable for testing throughout the software development lifecycle, ensuring the quality, reliability, and performance of web-based medical imaging applications.
Approximately 60% of the role is hands-on testing and verification. The remaining 40% covers test management and delivery leadership - owning the test strategy, assigning and tracking test activities, tracking project work and deliverables, facilitating the team's cadence events, and leading backlog refinement in partnership with the Architect.
Depending on project needs, this role may include people management responsibilities for testers, management of contract test resources, or both - day-to-day direction, performance feedback, capacity planning, and coordination with vendor partners.

Testing & Verification (approximately 60% of the role)

  • Author, execute, and maintain test cases and verification protocols.

  • Verify software functionality against functional requirements, user requirements, and design specifications.

  • Test web-based applications and imaging workflows, including 3D visualization and advanced rendering workflows.

  • Assist in testing systems, modules, integrations, and prototypes.

  • Perform installations, configurations, and execution of verification procedures.

  • Conduct ongoing regression, integration, and end-to-end testing.

  • Author and maintain verification and validation documentation supporting regulatory compliance - test plans, protocols, traceability, and summary reports - keeping records current and audit-ready.

  • Work with development teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues.

  • Report and track defects using approved defect tracking tools.

  • Maintain test environments and test data as required.

Test Management & Delivery Leadership (approximately 40% of the role)

  • Define and own the test strategy for the PACS product area, including risk-based coverage decisions.

  • Plan, assign, and track test activities across the team - including automated test development assigned to engineers - and review the resulting coverage and results.

  • Set direction for improvements to test coverage, test data, and testing processes, working with engineering to implement them.

  • Track overall project work and deliverables across the team - coding assignments, test assignments, and documentation - and maintain a current status picture.

  • Lead backlog refinement in partnership with the Architect, driving story clarity, acceptance criteria, and readiness. The Architect retains ownership of priority and backlog ordering.

  • Facilitate the team's cadence events - iteration planning, daily sync, review, and retrospective - keeping them crisp, time-boxed, and outcome-focused.

  • Surface progress, risks, dependencies, and blockers early to the team, the Architect, and management so they can act.

  • Remove impediments within the team's reach and escalate those beyond it.

  • Drive corrective and preventive actions from retrospectives, audits, and quality findings through to closure.

  • Track and report team-level delivery flow and predictability.

  • Where the role includes direct reports: manage, coach, and develop testers - setting goals and expectations, giving regular feedback, conducting performance reviews, and supporting career growth.

  • Where the role includes contract resources: onboard and direct contract testers, manage their day-to-day assignments and the quality of their output, and work with vendor partners on staffing, scope, and performance.

  • Forecast test staffing needs, participate in hiring and selection, and balance test capacity across projects and releases.

Core Competencies

  • Strong understanding of Software Quality Assurance methodologies.

  • Ability to define test strategies and risk-based testing approaches.

  • Ability to estimate testing effort and identify quality risks.

  • Experience with Agile software development, including facilitating team events and backlog refinement.

  • Ability to lead and coordinate work across a team and hold commitments on track, with or without line authority.

  • Ability to work independently on large, complex systems.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience leading or managing testers, including assigning work, giving feedback, and developing skills.

  • Experience directing contract or vendor test resources and holding them to quality and delivery expectations.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality, including the discipline required for documentation in a regulated environment.

Technical Skills

  • Experience testing 3D medical imaging, including MPR, MIP, and Volume Rendering.

  • Experience testing medical imaging applications.

  • Familiarity with DICOM standards and workflows.

  • Familiarity with PACS systems and radiology workflows.

  • Experience testing web-based applications.

  • Familiarity with Windows environments.

  • Experience with backlog and defect tracking tools such as Jira.

  • Experience using AI-assisted development and testing tools such as Microsoft Copilot, GitHub Copilot, and Claude - desired, not required.

Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.

Experience: 10+ years of experience in software testing and quality assurance, including experience leading or leading testers and/or contract test resources; experience planning and coordinating test activities across a team; experience testing web applications; experience producing verification documentation in a regulated software environment (e.g., FDA, IEC 62304, ISO 13485) preferred; experience testing 3D medical imaging, PACS, or healthcare applications preferred; experience facilitating Agile team events and backlog refinement preferred.
