Is SDET the same as QA?

An SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test) is a specialized QA role that involves designing and developing automated tests, often using programming skills and testing tools. Traditional QA roles focus on manual testing and quality assurance processes. While both aim to ensure software quality, SDET roles typically require coding expertise and a deeper understanding of software development.

What are Test Devs?

Test Devs, short for Test Developers, are professionals who design, develop, and implement automated testing frameworks and tools to ensure the quality of software applications. They work closely with software engineers to create robust test cases, identify bugs, and verify that software meets required standards. Test Devs often write code to automate repetitive testing tasks and help streamline the software development process. Their work is crucial in delivering reliable and high-quality software products.

Is QA harder than coding?

Test Dev roles involve designing and executing tests to ensure software quality, which requires understanding of both coding and testing tools. While coding focuses on creating software, QA emphasizes identifying defects and verifying functionality, making the difficulty dependent on individual skills and experience. Both areas require technical knowledge, but QA can be more challenging for those less familiar with testing methodologies and tools like automation frameworks.

Familiarity with automated testing tools like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG, and experience with CI/CD systems are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable software products by detecting issues early and collaborating efficiently with development teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by Test Developers when working with fast-paced development teams?

Test Developers often encounter challenges such as keeping automated tests synchronized with rapidly evolving codebases and adapting test frameworks to new technologies. Collaborating closely with developers is essential to ensure tests are relevant and maintainable, especially when requirements shift quickly. Additionally, balancing thorough test coverage with tight release deadlines can be demanding. Proactive communication and continuous learning are key strategies for overcoming these obstacles.

What is the QA tester's salary?

The average salary for a QA tester typically ranges from $50,000 to $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced testers with automation skills can earn higher salaries. Certifications and familiarity with testing tools like Selenium can also influence compensation.

Research Innovations, Inc. (RII) is breaking through the big, slow status quo with transformative technology that fundamentally improves the world. We build advanced software solutions for government and military missions, applying agile development and user-centered design to solve complex, mission-critical problems.

Dragonfly is RII's next-generation electromagnetic spectrum operations platform, combining advanced sensor integration, GPU-accelerated signal processing, artificial intelligence, and autonomous spectrum operations to deliver real-time spectrum awareness, passive target detection, electronic warfare support, and mission-focused analytics across man-portable, vehicle-mounted, maritime, and airborne environments.

We are seeking a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to ensure the quality, reliability, and operational readiness of Dragonfly's software across its full mission capability set. In this role, you will design and execute test strategies spanning controlled lab environments and live outdoor RF collection scenarios, validating everything from core signal processing pipelines and direction finding accuracy to partner system integrations and the browser-based tactical UI. You will work closely with software engineers, systems integrators, and program teams to define acceptance criteria, build automated test frameworks, and drive defects to resolution. The ideal candidate brings a strong software testing foundation combined with a genuine interest in RF systems, electronic warfare, or defense technologies, and thrives in a hands-on environment where the lab is just as likely to be a parking lot with an antenna as it is a bench in an office.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

Automated Test Development & Validation

  • Design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks supporting Dragonfly's microservices-based software architecture, browser-based tactical user interface, RF signal processing pipelines, and REST/GraphQL APIs.

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive test plans, test procedures, test cases, and requirements traceability matrices aligned with system-level requirements, customer objectives, and mission use cases.

  • Collaborate with software, hardware, and systems engineering teams to define acceptance criteria, identify defects early in the development lifecycle, and support quality assurance activities within CI/CD pipelines.

  • Maintain automated regression test suites to ensure software stability, performance, and repeatability across product releases.
