What are Test Devs?

Test Devs, short for Test Developers, are professionals who design, develop, and implement automated testing frameworks and tools to ensure the quality of software applications. They work closely with software engineers to create robust test cases, identify bugs, and verify that software meets required standards. Test Devs often write code to automate repetitive testing tasks and help streamline the software development process. Their work is crucial in delivering reliable and high-quality software products.

What is the difference between Test Dev vs Software Developer?

AspectTest DevSoftware Developer
Primary FocusDesigning and developing automated tests, testing frameworks, and quality assurance toolsCreating, coding, and maintaining software applications and features
Required SkillsProgramming, scripting, testing tools, understanding of QA processesProgramming, software design, problem-solving, application development
Work EnvironmentQA teams, testing labs, development teamsDevelopment teams, project environments, coding labs
Common CertificationsISTQB, Certified Software Tester, automation testing certificationsJava, C++, Python certifications, software development certifications

Test Developers focus on creating testing tools and automating quality assurance processes, while Software Developers primarily build and maintain software applications. Both roles require programming skills, but their core responsibilities differ in focus and output.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Test Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Developer, you need a strong background in software testing methodologies, programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C#), and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with automated testing tools like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG, and experience with CI/CD systems are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable software products by detecting issues early and collaborating efficiently with development teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by Test Developers when working with fast-paced development teams?

Test Developers often encounter challenges such as keeping automated tests synchronized with rapidly evolving codebases and adapting test frameworks to new technologies. Collaborating closely with developers is essential to ensure tests are relevant and maintainable, especially when requirements shift quickly. Additionally, balancing thorough test coverage with tight release deadlines can be demanding. Proactive communication and continuous learning are key strategies for overcoming these obstacles.

Job description

Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET)
Zetier seeks Software Development Engineers in Test (SDET) to design, build, and maintain scalable automated testing capabilities for embedded hardware, cyber platforms, and operational software systems. This role focuses on developing robust test infrastructure, improving product reliability, and enabling continuous validation across hardware and software solutions. Candidates will develop automated validation frameworks, integrate testing into CI/CD pipelines, and support verification activities spanning low-level firmware, networking systems, and mission-driven software capabilities. Work includes functional, integration, regression, and hardware-in-the-loop testing aligned with quality, operational effectiveness, and compliance objectives.
Required:
  • 5+ years experience in software development or test engineering
  • Strong programming experience in Python, C/C++, and/or Rust
  • Experience deploying automated test frameworks (e.g. pytest, Robot)
  • Experience testing embedded or Linux-based systems platforms
  • Hands-on experience integrating testing into CI/CD pipelines
  • Familiar debugging complex HW/SW system interactions
  • Comfortable writing clear technical documentation (e.g. test reports)
  • Strong communication skills across engineering and customer teams
  • Active U.S. security clearance

Desired:
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and device automation
  • Experience testing embedded systems, networking devices, or mobile
  • Experience with containerization (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, QEMU)
  • Familiar with network/protocol validation (e.g. Wireshark, Scapy)
  • Experience with RF or wireless systems (e.g. 802.11ac, Zigbee, SDR)
  • Experience testing firmware, drivers, and low-level code/services
  • Exposure to cybersecurity, vulnerability research, or pentest teams
  • Experience with observability, telemetry, or reliability engineering
