Job description

Now is the best time to join Johnstone Supply. As a member of the Johnstone University team, the Training Content Developer is responsible for developing or curating training content for Johnstone University utilizing sound Instructional Design, consulting with Johnstone Distributors on developing their own custom training and assisting them in leveraging the training tools and resources available, and may also act as instructor/facilitator for live (in-person and online) training events. Our customers are professional certified Technicians and Contractors who come to Johnstone for our product selection, expertise, and quality service. Johnstone is growing, and so can you.


Hybrid Work Schedule


Position responsibilities:

  • Conducts needs assessments and gathers information from key stakeholders
    • Gathers information from store personnel and contractors via meetings, surveys, tests, and/or interviews to understand business objectives and audience
    • Identifies knowledge and skills required to meet objectives and defines gap(s) between current and required knowledge and skill levels
    • Presents summary information and potential project plan to Learning Development and Operations Manager
  • Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in preparation for instructional design to create courses and/or job role training plans from existing content
  • Creates and proposes project plans (incl. resources needed, proposed budget, timeline) for development of training content to meet strategic initiatives and requests from Distributors
  • Evaluates previous custom content and identifies necessary revisions or update
  • Manages the Design and Development process for custom training content and ensures schedule, quality, and budget objectives are met
  • Uses development software and tools to create and edit course content, graphics, photos, and other supporting materials
  • Writes or reviews/edits training KSA’s and narration/scripts
  • Creates, reviews/edits storyboards, online modules, and supporting documentation
  • Updates Johnstone University custom content as needed
  • Maintains project status and presents dashboards or reports of project status on a regular basis
  • Evaluate outcomes linked to training objectives to measure training effectiveness and present results
  • Instruct/facilitate live and online/virtual training events and workshops as needed


Position requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) from an accredited four-year college or university; at least one year of related experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • an APTD and/or Instructional Design Certificate is preferred, but not required for this role.
  • Experience working within an LMS (Learning Management System) to load and manage content
  • Computer skills including course authoring and delivery, and MS Office programs such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Skilled in using authoring/programming tools such as Articulate 360, Camtasia, HTML5, and other related development tools
  • Ability to develop and use systems for organizing and keeping track of information
  • Ability to manage projects from initiation to completion, both on time and within budget
  • Ability to create business case, project scope statements, establish objectives, timelines, and deadlines, and create budgets and action plans
  • Skill in assessing project risk factors and creating contingency plans
