What is freelance content writing?

Freelance content writing is the practice of creating written content for clients or companies on a project or contract basis, rather than as a full-time employee. Freelance content writers typically produce blog posts, articles, website copy, product descriptions, and other types of written materials to help businesses communicate with their audiences. This role allows for flexible work arrangements, as writers can often choose their projects, set their schedules, and work remotely. Payment is usually per word, per article, or per project, depending on the agreement with the client.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance content writer?

To thrive as a Freelance Content Writer, you need excellent writing, research, and grammar skills, typically supported by a strong portfolio and relevant educational background. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) like WordPress, SEO tools, and platforms such as Grammarly or Google Docs is common. Time management, adaptability, and effective client communication are vital soft skills that help writers stand out. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality, engaging content that meets client expectations and deadlines in a competitive freelance market.

How do freelance content writers typically manage multiple client projects and deadlines?

Freelance content writers often juggle assignments from various clients, each with unique topics, guidelines, and timelines. Successful writers use project management tools or calendars to prioritize tasks and keep track of deadlines. Clear communication with clients about expectations and delivery schedules is key, and many writers set aside dedicated blocks of time for research, drafting, and revisions. This structured approach helps ensure high-quality work while maintaining a reliable workflow and client satisfaction.

Search & Comparison IntentFreelance Content Writing vs Content Marketing Specialist

Freelance Content Writers focus on creating written content for various clients on a project basis, often working independently. Content Marketing Specialists develop comprehensive strategies to promote brands through content, typically within organizations or agencies. While both roles involve content creation, Freelance Content Writers usually have more flexible schedules and diverse clients, whereas Content Marketing Specialists work within a team to execute marketing campaigns.

How do I become a freelance content writer?

To become a freelance content writer, develop strong writing skills and build a portfolio of sample work. Gain experience through practice or by taking online courses, and then create profiles on freelance platforms to find clients. Consistently improve your writing, meet deadlines, and adapt to different topics and audiences to succeed in the field.

Job description

Description:

In 1968, Stewart Brand published the Whole Earth Catalog โ€” a now-iconic publication that inspired generations of builders to think differently about what they could create. Decades later, Steve Jobs would call it โ€œone of the bibles of my generation.โ€

Weโ€™re not trying to recreate Brandโ€™s work, but itโ€™s a great reminder that the best content doesnโ€™t just answer questions โ€” it expands how people think, build, and solve problems.

Mercuryโ€™s Stories team is hiring a Senior Content Marketer to help shape and grow exceptional educational and informational content for founders and entrepreneurs โ€” people building companies, navigating uncertainty, and trying to make better decisions every day.

In this role, youโ€™ll drive the day-to-day operation of Mercuryโ€™s educational blog, partnering closely with product marketers, SEO, communications, creatives, and others to continually uplift its quality, reach, and business impact. Youโ€™ll develop content and distribution opportunities, edit and publish excellent work, think outside the box, and improve the systems that help our content program scale. This is a senior individual contributor role.

Weโ€™re looking for more than a great writer and editor (though you should be that, too!). Weโ€™re excited for an exceptional builder-operator who combines strong editorial judgment with a marketer's instinct for audience, distribution, and impact, plus a genuine curiosity about our audience.

If this sounds like you...
  • A sharp writer and editor with a knack for turning complex topics into content people actually want to read and engage with.
  • An audience-first marketer who balances creativity, craft, and data to make smart and high-impact decisions.
  • Deeply curious about business, entrepreneurship, finance, and what founders and builders need to successfully build and operate ambitious companies.
  • Always learning, whether it's new technologies, evolving media formats, or how audiences discover information.
  • Comfortable bringing clarity to ambiguity, collaborating across disciplines, and raising the quality of the work around you.
  • A self-directed program-builder who thrives in remote-first, async environments and brings structure and scalability to shared workโ€ฆ

...then read on.

In this role, you will:
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of Mercuryโ€™s educational blog, from content planning through assignment, editing, publishing, and ongoing optimization.
  • Write, edit, and package exceptional, performant content across blogs, newsletters, campaigns, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Manage freelancers and agency partners with thoughtful stewardship and grace to help scale the work while meeting or surpassing the quality bar
  • Partner with SEO/AEO, Product Marketing, Communications, Design, and other teams to identify opportunities and maximize the reach and impact of our content.
  • Proactively use performance data and audience insights to identify growth strategies, improve content performance, and help the team make smarter editorial investments.
  • Leverage AI and modern content tools to improve research, editing, and production workflows.
You have:
  • 8+ years working in content marketing, content strategy, editorial, or a related field.
  • An exceptional writer and editor, with a track record of elevating the work of other writers through thoughtful feedback and high editorial standards.
  • Proven success leading a blog, newsletter, publication, or similarly scaled editorial program.
  • Comfortable managing freelancers, agencies, and other external contributors to deliver high-quality work at scale.
  • A solid command of business, entrepreneurship, finance, or similar subject matter, with the ability to make it engaging and accessible.
  • Strong editorial judgment paired with a thoughtful marketing mindset โ€” you care as much about who sees the work as the quality of the work itself.
Compensation:

The total rewards package at Mercury includes base salary, equity (stock options/RSUs), and benefits.

Our salary and equity ranges are highly competitive within the SaaS and fintech industry and are updated regularly using the most reliable compensation survey data for our industry. New hire offers are made based on a candidateโ€™s experience, expertise, geographic location, and internal pay equity relative to peers.

Our target new hire base salary ranges for this role are the following:

  • US employees in New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle, or the San Francisco Bay Area: $158,200 - 197,800
  • US employees outside of the New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle or the San Francisco Bay Area: $142,400 - 178,000
  • Canadian employees (any location): 149,500 CAD - 186,900 CAD
