Job description

We’re looking for a Controls Engineer to join a fast-paced team working onsite at Tesla’s Fremont, California facility. In this role, you will be responsible for owning and implementing the solution from project concept to installation; this includes machine concepting, proof-of-principle, electrical design/layout, software design/programming, debug of hardware/software, acceptance testing, and installation/integration at the factory. If traveling more than 50 miles from the location, per diem will be provided.
Responsibilities
  • Programming and debugging structured text and ladder logic (mainly on Siemens TIA Portal)
  • Writing clean, organized, and reusable code
  • Building complex machine sequences for automation tasks like material handling, fastening, welding, testing, etc.
  • Using Python and SQL to connect equipment with Tesla’s Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and collect production data
  • Designing touchscreen HMIs with MappView/TwinCAT and SCADA dashboards in Ignition
  • Setting up and tuning servo drives and VFDs (experience with Schneider, B&R, Beckhoff, Siemens, SEW a plus)
  • Developing safety systems to protect people and equipment (robots, gantries, conveyors, etc.)
  • Overseeing electrical cabinets, field wiring, pneumatics, and fluid plumbing
  • Collaborating on early machine concepts with mechanical engineers and balancing product specs, costs, and timelines
  • Working closely with suppliers throughout design, build, and installation phases
  • Reviewing electrical schematics and defining hardware architecture
  • Creating design documentation and flowcharts; leading software reviews
  • Verifying wiring and communications (safety, I/O, networks)
  • Running test cycles to ensure machines and software meet performance requirements
  • Supporting equipment installation and alignment on the factory floor
Requirements
  • 1+ years of hands-on experience with Siemens PLCs and control systems
  • Strong PLC programming skills (Siemens required)
  • Familiarity with HMI/SCADA platforms like WinCC (primary) and Ignition (secondary)
  • Comfortable working with sensors, I/O, servos, drives, vision systems, barcode scanners, and other automation hardware
  • Solid understanding of industrial networking protocols (e.g., Profinet, TCP/IP, EtherCAT, etc.)
  • Experience with industrial robots like FANUC and KUKA
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, or related field—or equivalent real-world experience
