Job description

The maritime industry is expanding and improving port and harbor infrastructure. Our Ports and Marine Terminals team is growing to meet our clients' needs. Become part of a team of motivated planners and engineers who are excited to work on a diverse range of projects in waterfront infrastructure.
Stantec manages complex, large-scale commercial and infrastructure projects from conceptual planning, through design, and construction. Play a key role in developing new client relationships and engaging with existing Stantec clients. Be motivated to provide an immediate impact working on a local project and work closely with regional leadership to engage in business development activities.
Your Opportunity
The role of a Project Manager, Ports & Marine Terminals requires a minimum of 10 years of engineering design experience to lead the pursuit and delivery of port infrastructure projects in the San Pedro Basin. We are looking for someone who is technically proficient, takes initiative, is a team player, and is looking for a challenge. We offer opportunities for rapid growth through marketing and business development, client exposure, project management, and efficient delivery. The position requires the ability to build and nurture existing Stantec client relationships, acquire new client relationships in this market sector and oversee the technical delivery of projects.
This is a leadership position with expectations for further growth by leading client meetings, performing financial and schedule management, coordinating tasks and personnel, and providing technical leadership and mentoring of junior staff. This individual will help shape and develop our talented local team while being an integral part of Stantec's continued growth in the region and country.
Your Key Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Works collaboratively with Marketing to secure new clients and new work, including the preparation of proposals, interviews, and presentations.
  • Develop positive relations with existing and prospective clients.
  • Coordinate and develop proposal graphics illustrating technical scope.
  • Create proposal documentation including project scope, budgets, and design approach for projects of all sizes.
  • Oversee and manage multiple projects serving as the Project Manager, Technical Lead, and/or Task Manager for civil infrastructure projects.
  • Serve as the project's point of contact with clients, agencies, and others to obtain and determine project requirements and approvals.
  • Manage and monitor schedule and budget performance of assigned projects.
  • Plan, organize, and manage the production of project deliverables to ensure on-time delivery, technical quality, and within budget.
  • Lead project coordination meetings with clients, agency stakeholders, subconsultants, and internal disciplines.
  • Provide direct and indirect supervision to staff; develop staff skills and abilities by providing mentorship to strengthen technical abilities and guide career development.
  • Review team's work and provide technical guidance on design approaches and challenges for the construction, renovation or improvement of marine structures and port facilities.
  • Understand interdisciplinary requirements for port projects and be capable of performing QA/QC reviews.
  • Engage with peers in Ports & Marine Terminals across the organization.
  • Recruit and mentor regional Ports & Marine Terminal's staff.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) as well as interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • An entrepreneurial orientation with strong understanding of the business development challenges of a consulting-services provider.
  • Knowledge of shipyard design and construction.
  • Experience working with regional port authorities
  • Demonstrated project experience through professional publications and presentations.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to conduct effective client and agency presentations and written technical report preparation, as well as effective skills working in diverse team environments with staff, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Completing design calculations for civil or structural engineering practice such as: navigation channel design, marine structures, terminal planning, utility system design, pavement design, or mooring analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience with preparation of design plans and specifications for bidding and construction purposes.
  • Demonstrated experience with construction oversight and administration duties including shop drawing approval, review of contractor surveys/progress reports, and execution of final certification(s) upon project completion.
  • Skill in Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, and Project).
  • Demonstrated successful experience in decision making, including making sound defensible business decisions; and identifying, assessing, evaluating and solving complex problems.
  • Strong project management credentials, including but not limited to scoping, establishing schedules, project plan development, and routine tracking/reporting throughout project implementation.
  • Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card which requires a TSA background check.

Education and Experience
  • Minimum of ten (10) years' relevant experience in port planning/engineering discipline and prior marine, port or coastal engineering work.
  • Bachelor's degree in planning, environmental science, or engineering.
  • Preferred registration as a license professional engineer (PE) in CA, WA, AK, HI, or ability to earn within 6 months

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
