Job description

Job Summary:

The position above is tasked with overseeing the Estimating Department. The person in this position should plan on creating, modifying, implementing, and executing best practices which align with industry standards and Tennyson’s playbook, core values and keys to success.  The Estimating Manager will play a critical role of supporting and advancing Tennyson’s culture as described in our playbook, with a key focus on accountability, performance and customer service. The Estimating Manager should anticipate their role in handling the daily responsibilities below.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and interface with owners, project managers and other project team members to resolve any technical matters during planning and development, negotiation and contract execution
  • Ensures that we have the proper coverage from subcontractors on bid day.
  • Review Estimators Budgets and put together the final bid.
  • Analyze and build estimate data that impact the cost of labor, materials, equipment, location, and other factors to ensure a quality and timely estimate.
  • Analyze alternative means and construction methods to increase competitiveness of a bid.
  • Utilize existing cost history as a check basis.
  • Apply mathematical calculations to ensure estimated costs are accurate.
  • Analyze risks and communicate strategies to mitigate future construction obstacles.
  • Communicate estimate bid information to field operations at pre-construction meetings to ensure understanding of project scope.
  • Complete a bid start to finish with zero oversight
  • Understand/comprehend full scope for all trades
  • Be able to negotiate with clients
  • Train/review/mentor staff beneath them
  • Foresee problems and provide solutions for work
  • Lead, manage, and hold accountable the estimating team to company standards, deadlines, and performance expectations.
  • Establish bid review processes and lead estimate review meetings before submission.
  • Engage at high level with operations into details of project and implications of operational decisions on budget.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.

  • Knowledge of various pricing models
  • Knowledge of construction practices, specific to the Tennyson’s scopes of work.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a construction related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as an Estimator, performing responsibilities equivalent to those listed above
  • Working knowledge and comprehension of construction management
  • Effective negotiation skills

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
