Position Description:
The Boiler Tender/Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and continuous operation, monitoring, maintenance, and repair of boiler systems and associated auxiliary equipment. The position ensures steam, hot water, and heating systems operate in compliance with applicable safety, environmental, and operational standards. The Boiler Tender/Operator performs routine inspections, adjusts controls, maintains operating logs, and responds to system malfunctions to support uninterrupted facility operations.
Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operate and monitor boilers, steam generators, hot water systems, and associated equipment.
• Start up, shut down, and regulate boiler operations according to established procedures.
• Monitor gauges, meters, control panels, and computerized building management systems to ensure proper operation.
• Maintain proper boiler water chemistry and perform water treatment testing and adjustments.
• Conduct routine inspections of boilers, pumps, valves, burners, fuel systems, piping, and auxiliary equipment.
• Identify and troubleshoot operational issues and equipment malfunctions.
• Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on boilers and related systems.
• Maintain accurate operating logs, maintenance records, and inspection reports.
• Respond to emergency situations involving steam, hot water, fuel, or pressure systems.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, local codes, and facility safety requirements.
• Coordinate with maintenance personnel and contractors during repairs and outages.
• Maintain housekeeping standards in boiler plant and mechanical spaces.
• Assist with energy conservation and efficiency initiatives.
• Support facility operations during scheduled and unscheduled utility interruptions.
Required Qualifications and Experience:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of 2-5 years of experience operating commercial, industrial, or institutional boiler systems.
• Boiler Operator License or Stationary Engineer License (where required by state or local regulations).
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
• Knowledge of steam generation, combustion systems, fuel delivery systems, and water treatment processes.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and operating procedures.
• Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and building automation systems (BAS) preferred.
• Knowledge of boiler operation principles, pressure systems, and combustion controls.
• Understanding of safety procedures related to high-pressure steam and hot water systems.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical and operational problems.
• Experience in O&M to include support of a work force that is responsible for O&M and repair of all facility systems, subsystems, and selected equipment typically found in a Base Operating Services contract.
• Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
• Must be able to pass a company drug screen and background check. Must possess a valid state driver's license and insurable driving record.
