The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Dean of Academic Affairs, the incumbent is responsible for overseeing the management of all video journalism programs, including the core video curriculum, the Visual Craft Track, the Documentary Specialization, the Broadcast sequence and other existing and future programs. The Associate Director also plays a pivotal role in admissions, curricula development, classroom instruction, and thesis supervision.
Responsibilities
  • Develops comprehensive curricula and pedagogical approaches for the video journalism programs and tracks. Manages the deployment of video journalism instruction. Works directly with faculty to create syllabi and define the educational objectives related to the visual elements of their course; including the definition of future plans and direction of such endeavors.
  • Develops and proposes changes to the curriculum. Conducts research to support the further development of the degree programs, and the innovative use of multimedia technology for visual storytelling. Creates and designs courses that incorporate the latest, innovative technology relevant to visual journalism. Provides strategic direction on the use of multimedia technology in the classroom, and its impact on the curriculum, faculty, and infrastructure.
  • Oversees the documentary thesis projects process and other video masters projects, and provides extensive hands-on guidance and support to students throughout the production of their thesis work.
  • Manages the broadcast journalism program, including leading instruction for the spring production course. Leads training for social-orientated storytelling.
  • Oversees the organization and execution of the annual documentary thesis showcase screening, collaborating with filmmakers to update materials, and supervises the production of publicity materials such as posters, trailers, programs, and website content. Manages the documentary budget and consults with the finance department.
  • In admissions, responsibilities include reviewing applications, conducting interviews with prospective students, and actively participating in the review committee. Implements strategies to recruit and retain potential and admitted applicants.
  • Works with career services to ensure job placement programs are geared to the particular needs of multimedia students.
  • Manages special projects and events as needed by the Academic Affairs department.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 4-6 years' related experience in video journalism and newsgathering, program administration in journalism, or related areas in higher education or non-profit sectors.
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills; attention to detail. Ability to multi-task and excellent oral and written communication skills.
