What types of projects and responsibilities can a Temporary Structural Engineer expect during their assignment?

As a Temporary Structural Engineer, you will often be brought in to support specific projects or to cover for short-term increases in workload. Typical responsibilities include performing structural analysis, preparing calculations and design documentation, reviewing drawings, and coordinating with architects and contractors. You may also be asked to conduct site inspections and ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards. Temporary assignments offer valuable exposure to a variety of project types and allow you to collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, which can broaden your experience and enhance your professional network.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering, typically supported by a relevant degree and professional engineering licensure. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis tools like SAP2000 or ETABS is crucial, along with knowledge of building codes. Strong problem-solving, communication, and time management skills help you excel in project-driven, often deadline-sensitive environments. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and compliant structural designs within the limited timeframe of temporary assignments.

What is the difference between Temporary Structural Engineer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectTemporary Structural EngineerStructural Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering; licensure may not be mandatory for temporary rolesRequires a bachelor's degree, and often a Professional Engineer (PE) license for independent practice
Work EnvironmentProject-based, short-term assignments on construction sites or consulting firmsLong-term employment in design firms, consulting, or construction companies
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by firms needing temporary support during peak projects or staff shortagesEmployed for ongoing design, analysis, and project management tasks

Temporary Structural Engineers provide short-term support for specific projects, often on a contract basis, while Structural Engineers typically hold permanent roles with broader responsibilities in design and analysis. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds, but licensure and employment stability differ.

What does a Temporary Structural Engineer do?

A Temporary Structural Engineer is responsible for designing and analyzing temporary structures used during the construction process, such as scaffolding, formwork, shoring, and supports. They ensure these temporary systems are safe, stable, and comply with building codes while construction or maintenance work takes place. Their work involves close collaboration with construction teams to adapt designs to site conditions and project schedules. Temporary Structural Engineers play a critical role in preventing accidents and ensuring the overall safety of a construction site.

Job Description

This role offers an experienced Structural Engineer the opportunity to take full technical ownership of temporary structure designs, including scaffolds, sidewalk bridges, hoists, shoring systems, and other construction-related temporary works. You will serve as the licensed Professional Engineer responsible for designing, reviewing, and sealing engineered drawings and calculations, while collaborating closely with internal teams, clients, and project stakeholders. The position is ideal for a seasoned engineer already working in the temporary works or construction engineering niche who is ready to stamp and take responsibility for designs from day one and contribute to innovative solutions on high-profile building projects.

Responsibilities

  • Design, review, and seal engineered drawings and calculations for temporary structures such as scaffold systems, sidewalk bridges and fencing, construction hoists and personnel elevators, shoring systems, and other temporary works and construction engineering projects.
  • Assume professional responsibility for stamped designs from day one, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with and receive general administrative direction from a governing board or regional council, aligning engineering activities with organizational goals.
  • Discuss all projects in detail with branch teams and customers, providing clear, timely responses to technical inquiries and project questions.
  • Initiate and maintain extensive contact with key engineers, officials, and representatives of other organizations and companies to support project execution and technical coordination.
  • Routinely interact with organizational leaders, clients, customers, officials, contractors, and other stakeholders to communicate technical concepts and project status.
  • Set priorities across multiple projects and reconcile directions from competing interests to ensure timely and accurate delivery of engineering work.
  • Develop new techniques and improved processes, materials, or products related to temporary works and access engineering, contributing to continuous improvement.
  • Stay informed on emerging methods, technologies, and developments relevant to temporary structures and construction engineering, and proactively recommend new practices or program adjustments.
  • Apply advanced engineering knowledge and expertise gained through progressive experience to resolve complex issues and unique project circumstances.
  • Assist in preparing proposals for professional engineering services, helping to secure funding and support for new projects and programs.
  • Oversee the technical, legal, and financial aspects of engineering programs as they relate to temporary structures and access systems.
  • Determine program objectives and requirements, and translate them into clear engineering standards, guidelines, and design criteria.
  • Develop and maintain standards and guidelines for temporary structure design, analysis, documentation, and quality control.
  • Communicate engineering concepts and design intent effectively to drafters, designers, and other engineers, ensuring accurate translation into drawings and models.
  • Check and approve drawings at all project levels, verifying technical accuracy, constructability, and compliance with standards and codes.
  • Strategically assign projects within the engineering team, leveraging individual strengths and areas of expertise to optimize project outcomes.
  • Perform and check complex structural calculations, including nodal and finite element analyses, to validate design safety and performance.
  • Create and approve engineering calculators and tools used for scaffold design and other temporary works to standardize and streamline design processes.
  • Review and obtain all necessary information for scaffold design projects, including site conditions, loading requirements, and project constraints.
  • Utilize advanced CAD and 3D modeling skills to draft and review projects of intermediate and higher complexity using Revit and related tools.
  • Apply full knowledge of relevant regulations and codes to ensure all temporary structures meet or exceed required standards.
  • Conduct site inspections as needed to verify field conditions, assess existing installations, and support safe and compliant implementation of designs.

Essential Skills

  • Direct, hands-on experience designing, reviewing, and sealing engineered drawings and calculations for temporary structures and access engineering projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with temporary structures, including scaffold design, sidewalk bridges and fencing, construction hoists and personnel elevators, shoring systems, temporary works engineering, or construction engineering.
  • Comfort and readiness to stamp and take full responsibility for temporary structure designs from the first day in the role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program; master’s degree or equivalent advanced education.
  • Ability to perform and check complex structural calculations, including nodal and finite element analysis.
  • Proficiency in creating and approving engineering calculators and tools used for scaffold and temporary works design.
  • Strong proficiency with advanced CAD and 3D modeling tools, including Revit, for drafting projects of intermediate complexity or higher.
  • Full working knowledge of applicable regulations, codes, and standards governing structural and temporary works engineering.
  • Ability to review and gather all necessary information for scaffold and temporary structure design projects.
  • Capability to conduct site inspections to verify conditions and support safe implementation of designs.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex engineering concepts clearly to drafters, designers, engineers, and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience setting priorities, managing multiple projects, and reconciling directions from competing interests.
