Search/Comparison IntentYesCommonly compared with Mid Level Structural Engineer

The Mid Level Structural Engineer typically holds a PE license, performs structural analysis, and manages projects, whereas a Structural Designer focuses on creating detailed drawings and plans. Both roles are essential in the structural engineering industry, but the engineer has broader responsibilities including analysis and project oversight.

What are some typical challenges a Mid Level Structural Engineer faces when transitioning from junior roles, and how can they successfully navigate them?

As a Mid Level Structural Engineer, you may encounter challenges such as handling increased project responsibility, managing junior team members, and coordinating with multiple disciplines (like architects, contractors, and MEP engineers). You'll also be expected to make more independent decisions and ensure your designs comply with complex codes and standards. To navigate these challenges, focus on honing your project management skills, actively seek feedback from senior engineers, and maintain clear communication with your team and stakeholders. Embracing continuous learning and proactive problem-solving will help you grow and succeed in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mid Level Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mid Level Structural Engineer, you need a solid foundation in structural analysis, design principles, and a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, often with professional EIT or PE certification. Proficiency with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, or ETABS is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial for collaborating with project teams and conveying technical information. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and innovative structural solutions that meet project requirements and regulatory standards.

What does a Mid Level Structural Engineer do?

A Mid Level Structural Engineer designs, analyzes, and oversees the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe and durable. They typically work as part of a team, using engineering principles and software tools to create structural plans, review blueprints, and solve complex design challenges. In addition to technical tasks, they often coordinate with architects, contractors, and other engineers, and may mentor junior staff. Their responsibilities often include site visits, preparing reports, and ensuring projects comply with codes and regulations.

Job Description
Position Summary
We are seeking a Mid-Level Structural Engineer to support structural analysis, design, and project delivery across a portfolio of structural work. This role is for an engineer who can independently execute defined design scopes, produce well-organized calculation packages, and drive coordination with minimal rework-while escalating key technical decisions to senior engineers. The ideal candidate is technically rigorous, quality-driven, and comfortable balancing design, documentation, and construction-phase support.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Analysis & Design Execution
  • Perform structural analysis and design for assigned project components (gravity and lateral systems, framing layouts, member sizing, and coordination of detailing intent).
  • Develop complete, traceable calculation packages with clear assumptions, code references, and design checks.
  • Support design of steel and/or concrete elements, and coordinate load paths and design criteria across structural components.
  • Identify constructability concerns and propose practical solutions aligned with design intent.
Deliverables & Coordination
  • Produce and/or coordinate structural design deliverables including drawings, details, schedules, and technical notes.
  • Review and comment on shop drawings/submittals and draft RFI responses for senior review/approval.
  • Coordinate structural interfaces with architecture, MEP, and civil disciplines to prevent clashes and downstream change.
QA/QC & Engineering Standards
  • Apply internal standards and QA/QC processes; perform self-checks and peer reviews as assigned.
  • Proactively catch inconsistencies between calculations, plans, and details; drive corrections before issue.
  • Maintain audit-ready project files, version control, and decision logs.
Construction-Phase Support
  • Provide engineering support during construction: evaluate field conditions, draft clarifications, and support resolution paths.
  • Attend coordination meetings and/or site visits as needed; document findings and action items.

Job Requirements
Required Qualifications (Must Have)
  • Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering (Structural concentration) from an accredited institution.
  • 4-7 years of structural engineering experience (analysis, design, deliverables, coordination).
  • Strong understanding of structural systems and construction documentation.
  • Proficiency with common tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, RISA, STAAD Pro (or comparable analysis/modeling platforms).
  • Demonstrated ability to produce complete, defensible calculation packages and coordinate deliverables with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills and ability to document decisions clearly.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)
  • EIT / FE passed; progress toward P.E. (preferred).
  • 4+ years of structural engineering experience AND active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license (current and in good standing)
  • 6+ years of structural engineering experience (analysis, design, deliverables, coordination) without a P.E. license
  • Experience with a mix of steel and concrete design, and construction-phase engineering support.
  • Experience reviewing submittals/shop drawings and supporting RFI/field issue resolution.
  • Prior experience mentoring junior engineers or directing drafting/model updates.
